2.2 on steroids

I really appreciate all of the effort that is going into the 2.2 build for our Scrolls. The original Steroid thread is getting very long (nearly fifty replies) and is a bit confusing to simple people like me so I'd like to ask some questions.

1) DJSteve is leading this project but is there anyone else helping him? We may not need too many people directly involved but I am willing to try to help if needed. I have some experience with Linux, including kernel compilation, although I'm certainly not a C programmer. My email is neil.turner at cwgsy.net.

2) Is the 22.zip beta being updated as problems are solved?

3) Could the Forum host a simple list of features that are believed to be working and those which are still being worked-upon? My experience is that open-source developers are very helpful provided they think that you've made reasonable efforts to describe and solve the problem yourself. If we find we are getting stuck on specific problems then perhaps we can find someone outside the group who may be able to help us solve that problem more quickly.

I am sure that there are other members of the forum who want to see 2.2 working and are willing to try to help. Meanwhile, thanks again to DJSteve.

Neil

From what I remember installing 2.2, the things most in need of fixing were:

3D Acceleration / Video Playback
WiFi needs static IP and softmac pushed from 2.1 or it bums out
Many apps / settings crashing

Some other things too, but it was a while ago I tried it so cant remember any others

Working.

It boots
Touchscreen
Sound
Wifi (After mod)
Bigger /data partition (Replaces /nand for 1.4Gb space improvement)

Detection's correct in his brief breakdown of stuff being worked on...
I'm currently running Steve's beta and whenever I get chance (Snowed under @ work & home) & Steve's about and not stowed under been providing feedback and testing on it.
It's coming slong slowly but I didn't expect and overnight out-of-the box experience...

Don't get me wrong, I am most grateful to Steve and others for the work they have done getting a bootable 2.2 system, which I have tried, but as pointed out it has too many flaws to be really useable at this stage.

Is there any prospect of getting a 2.2 system in the near future that is nearer production quality? Reason I ask is that I really need 2.2 to connect to my work systems (email and VPN) and for all the other usual reasons. Of course I didn't realise this when I bought the scroll! Using the scroll has been a useful Android learning exercise but I'm going to have to move on to another device if there is no realistic prospect of 2.2 (or later).

There then comes a problem of which other device, as they all have shortcomings, even the Galaxy. The scroll is just about perfect in terms of features - form factor, processor, 2 x USB, sdcard, wifi, graphics - and there is nothing that comes near it in terms of value for money, but for me anyway lack of 2.2 has become a showstopper. The nearest is the Linx Commtiva N700 which does have 2.2 but I understand from reviews is rather underpowered.

To repeat, kudos to all those giving their time freely on this project, and I wish I had the technical skills to help. I would just like an honest appraisal if and when there might be a pukka 2.2 release. I don't mind if the answer is no or never! I feel bad even asking this question but I hope those involved won't be offended.

I was rather hoping for either:

a) More 2.2 betas
b) More blog style updates on what is being worked on and what problems there are and what is needed to fix them

We are a community and can all help with this.

Last I asked Steve he'd quit trying to work on 2.2 and was hoping to work on 3.0

Seriously? I thought that 3.0 wouldn't work on the scroll hardware? A quick google suggests that the minimum requirements are:

# 1GHZ CPU
# 512MB RAM
# 3.5-inch (or larger ) displays

So I guess the answer to my question in simple terms is no. Or at least not in the foreseeable future. Hey ho.
