dis-satisfaction with storage options support

Postby awarby » January 26th, 2011, 2:17 pm

MY original email.I recently purchased this device from Maplin Electronics and while the equipment I purchase from them is usually of a high standard I am totally disappointed with your so called ‘mobile internet device’ I find it exceedingly slow, I cannot download apps from the android market directly I then have to use third party software and when it downloads and installs the device seems sluggish or non-responsive to the majority of the Apps I have tried installing. Angry birds for one (I read that it’s a graphics issue I find that hard to believe as your device boasts HD 1080P.
You describe the device as an ‘android’ MID I have and had many android devices and find this to be Android in name only.
With reference to the above problems none of my other past or present devices (Dell STREAK x2, Sony xperia x10 and x10 mini, Google nexus 1,etc) have played up like yours. The only thing I have found it useful for is as a digital photo frame as it does stand on its side very well.
Why can it not be upgraded I understand from reading the many forums that you deem Android 2.1 to be sufficient, if that is the case why not modify it for Tablet use, an example being the menu system is almost identical to my Dell Streak, and that is a tablet device AND a phone so why have the phone menu options it doesn’t even work with Skype or Yahoo messenger.

Their response.
HI Andrew, we have many satisfied customer who have bought the scroll. Our feedback from customers have been very positive and we intend to launch new models in the future.

And pointed me here (am already a member)
My reply (sorry)
OK I will air my opinion on that site and for info all they go on about on there is the other machines available with software to crack your device I Dont normally complain as i research purchases first but your device is a blatant miss sell saying it is compatible with ANDROID MARKET if by that you mean you can view the decent apps available ok but compatible to me would mean you can download at least 1 but as yet of the 25 i have tried not a single one works. it just continuously says downloading. BUT YOU WOULD KNOW THAT AS THAT IS ALSO ON THE FORUM the processor in mine is either faulty or not upto the job as i mentioned previously i have had a few android devices 1 of which only has a 600mhz processor but is lightening fast compared to your picture and video viewer. web pages are slow menu and screen response is slow the whole thing is slow. and as for customer support that is as slow. 13 days to reply must be all the emails saying what a wonderful picture and video viewer they've bought.

I agree insofar as the "Android market compatible" (as plastered on the back of the device) is concerned - in fact it is quite disgraceful as my market app worked for a few hours then gave up. To advertise it as "compatible" means the app should work as intended. It is equivalent to buying an iPad and discovering you are unable to download anything from the App store. The Trades Descriptions Act 1968 comes to mind though I have noticed they have updated their site removing many references to the Market application

Regarding the speed, I have had no issue on that front or read any/many reports on that subject, maybe your device is faulty - get it replaced or your money back.

As for their one line response, it is anodyne at best and to me bordering on plain rude. The best bit about the scroll? This forum because SO are entirely hopeless in providing any meaningful discourse as you now well know!

I personally haven't had much agro with the scroll or with their support. I was lucky in that I received a scroll with firmware 0.94 which had a functioning marketplace and I was able to root without issue. The scroll is not perfect by any means, but for 140 pounds I don't think its bad for the price.

ALTHOUGH, if I'd received one of their latest firmware versions with no market or you tube I'd be more annoyed.

the problem with the market isnt the scroll....you just need to do a google and see the 2million posts dating back 3 years regarding the never ending "downloading" message.....it would appear to be down to the market itself and since its been ongoing for 3 years with so many complaints from developers and user alike - google either cant be arsed fixing it.....or they dont know how to

its certainly not a showstopper for £140 IMHO --- theres other ways to transfer files :)
