Hi......

Postby SiScroll » February 24th, 2011, 10:25 am

Mornin' all.

First post on what I suspect is going to be a well used forum!

Picked up a new Scroll 7" yesterday and finally sat down last night to have a play with it. I have good experience of PC's and also iPhones but Android is something completely new for me and therefore I'm keen to start finding out about it.

I'm well aware of the "search before you post!" - and I'm quite happy to have a poke around and try things out before I get well and truly confused (highly likely!!) - so if someone could just confirm I'm heading in the right direction I'd be grateful!

I've experienced the infamous marketplace app error already. Appeared to work initially on the first attempt (downloaded Adobe PDF reader fine) but subsequent attempts just show an error screen. After an hour or so of headscratching and factory resetting it appears this is pretty much a given with these Scroll devices now. Am I right in assuming the way to fix it is explained in the post by Detection regarding the Market Fix?

The Scroll came loaded with FW version 0.94. Part of the process I took to try to resolve the marketplace app error (before I realised it's a known issue) was to upgrade the FW to 1.02. Only did it earlier this morning before heading into work so haven't had chance to see what effect it's had (if any) on the market app error. Was it a wise move?! Were there any benefits to doing this??

Battery life didn't seem great (and yes, I charged it fully before using it and have read somewhere that it's recommended to charge/run down to 0%/charge at least 3 times to get the battery working optimally!) but appears that there's some stuff running in the background related to the Android phones that drains the battery on the Scrolls faster than normal. Following some reading on here it seems it's worth uninstalling this and in order to do so I need to "root" the device? Again, is this the right assumption or have I latched on to something completely different?!?

Think that should keep me busy for now! I've also read about ways to improve the general performance of these devices on here (installing build.prop?!) but I'll just concentrate on getting it working properly first!

root and install clockworkmod if you can. backup and then remove the phone apps.
As you updated to 1.02 you may have the issue some people are having where clockworkmod breaks and you just get a black screen but someone on here posted stock versions of the recovery to flash if this happens

Thanks for the replies. Signature duly added (wasn't sure about the kernel version so will check tonight).

Will work through the procedure for fixing the market app tonight and if that goes ok then I'll have a go at the other suggestions. Haven't got a developer background with IT so it's a steep learning curve with me whenever fixes involve anything other than downloading and installing a file! Consequently forums like this one are a life-saver!! I'm happy to play around though and the guides that have been put together on here seem to take you through the process step by step, which is exactly what I need! (plus, with nothing on the Scroll at the minute I can factory reset it as many times as I want if it all goes pear-shaped!!!).

@ SiScroll

Welcome to the forum. I was surprised to hear that you had market issues with FW 0.94 - I have not had these - only that it got better once the PMT apps were renamed. The only thing that might have caused the issues on that FW, was that you used a google a/c to sign in on the scroll that has been used for other Android devices and/or a non @gmail.com a/c. Anyway that's by the by now as you have downgraded, upgraded to FW 1.02.

Enjoy. :)

@ Warpedflash - Happy Birthday, hope you have a good one.

If you need a little one-on-one assistance, several of us are generally about on IRC.

I've created a custom mIRC (www.mirc.com) which takes forum users to the Scroll Tablet Forum IRC channel on Freenode (www.freenode.net). Get it here: http://naphoria.com/scroll-forum-irc.exe (Naphoria is my local web server). It will install and log you on automatically.

@ charlie

Thanks for the welcome!

Didn't have a Google account so had to create one from scratch when setting the Scroll up. Downloaded (and installed) the Adobe PDF Reader first and it worked fine. Subsequent attempts at further apps failed. Looked like it was loading the market app (scrolling circular loading icon) then just came up with an error box in the middle of the screen with the option to retry or cancel (something about a server error has occurred). If I reset it to factory defaults it was the same - the first app it let me download but from that point on nothing!

The only reason I upgraded to 1.02 was I reasoned that the issue might have been resolved with a later firmware update........then I found the whole market app/StorageOptions/Google debate and things started to become a little clearer!!

Tidy little unit though and looking forward to getting to grips with Android over the coming months and seeing what it can do!

(scrolling circular loading icon)

I could be wrong but that sounds more like an issue with the sync to your google a/c. The download icon for any downloads is a 'down arrow' to a 'line' on the left hand side of the screen. The icon you have described sounds like the sync one.
