bdb and eddie

Thanks guys, i seem to have root access (superuser).

Have one problem that I dont see anything on either USB (scsi) or sdcard at the moment for some reason so cannot run superuser.apk.

Not sure if it as a result of the steps i did, whether is is because of rooting and i have to do something i didnt do before, but i seem to be rooted.

Will backup as suggested by bdb in the morning and try to work out why I cant see either USB or SDCRAD via the scroll.

Thanks again

Once i have images i will post and will get onto making a how to that worked for me once i have sorted things out.

If I go factory defaults will i be unrooted again?

Babysitting the grandkids while the school is on strike so unable to do too much this morning.

I am now rooted and everything is working again.

Will back up everything that I can to the laptop desktop later today before I start messing about.

I will draw up a "how to that worked for me using ADB" with a few lines of explanation. I will try to work out by searching unix/android shell sites what the commands actually do and if possible make it as easy as possible to roll back if needed. Will run thus past bdb and eddie and if they think it worthy I will post.

If someone can tell me how to get "images" and which images are needed I will grab them and post here. Do I need to remove the apps I have installed to get images that are any use to anyone?

Thanks again to bdb and eddie.

If anyone has any advice on windows software applications I can use to examine image files etc to make sense of some of it I would appreciate it. I guess some of it will be binary stuff that makes little sense but if anyone has done any detective work and can help I would appreciate it. then will come GPS.

Thanks guys

It's the little things in life that make it all worth while isn't it! :D

By the way, I've looked at the "update" for the capacitive Scroll that bdb pointed out, and it contains everything I was looking for, so don't worry about the images on my account. Others on here might find them useful though, and they'd probably be looking for images without any apps installed to, or removed from, the basic machine. You should also clean it back to "factory reset" level to make sure none of your personal information is in the images, e.g. google passwords, wifi WPA settings etc. Come to think of it, I'm not sure whether the factory reset completely cleans the partition, i.e. erases all the data rather than just removing blocks from the file structure. It should do, but I'd check first.

Thanks to bdb for explaining the SDcard arrangement on the Scroll, seems a bit odd to have the two SDcards(I didn't know it had two) connected in the filesystem like that, but maybe that's the Android way.

I don't have any tools for examining the Android images under Windows. I've mainly been using Ubuntu Linux for mucking about with them. There are some Perl scripts for dismantling the boot and recovery images and these might be runnable under Windows, but once you start dealing with Android files, the lack of Linux permission information under Windows (all that chmod and chown stuff) make life just too complicated. Might be worth googling around a bit though - there may be some stuff out there.

Happy rooting!

Thanks eddie

Looks like I might have to look at linux. I used to love messing about with DOS and assembly language before they invented windows (ok CP/M too) so i find it hard to avoid the challenge.

I have a help rqeuest for backing up so will start a new thread.
