What is it that deletes 'unapproved' shortcuts?

Postby Whitebeam » January 12th, 2012, 12:13 am

I can place a shortcut to Market onto my 7" Cap homescreen using Any Cut, and it works nicely. Within a few minutes it has disappeared again. What process is going round censoring what I have done? I'm bl**dy incensed about this! I want that 'thought police' process caught and destroyed!

That is strange, I have never had that issue before, I hope it's a bug and not a Google monitoring app.

What home launcher are you using - (Also I take it you on OS 2.3.4.)

Is this just happening with the market icon?

EDIT- P.S. Just remembered, if the app you are trying to place the icon on the homepage for, is located on a SD card this can cause this type of behaviour.

OS is 2.3.1.

Not certain what you mean by launcher (still trying to understand basic Android speak ;-) .

I've just thought that maybe I'm misunderstanding the Android speak in Any Cut?

Here's what I'm doing (typed as I did it) ... I'm using Any Cut to place a shortcut to the Market on the home screen desktop as follows: long press on the empty place on the desktop; in response to 'Add to Home Screen' I select Shortcuts; in response to Select shortcut I select Any Cut; I then select Activity; in response to Choose an activity I scroll down and select Market; I allow it to automatically name the shortcut 'Market' and select OK. There is now a shortcut to the Market on my home page. If I touch this, the Market runs. Superb.

I go back to the home screen and the shortcut is still there. Superb.

Ten seconds later I look at the Home Screen again - no shortcut. Aaaaargh!

Same happens if I make a shortcut to Contacts in exactly the same way.

The same doesn't happen if I make a shortcut to Tesco Groceries (thanks for that, BTW).

If I look in /system/app I see Contacts.apk and Vending.apk - I assume that these are the apps I'm running? (Again, Android not-savvy yet I'm afraid :-( )

Any thoughts? Any better way of getting Market and Contacts onto my home screen without having to go through the Google search to get them?

When you are looking at your home screen, that is the launcher - (you are most likely using the stock android one.) You can get 3rd party launchers example here - there are many of them. - I use the paid version of that one.

When in your app draw - long press on the app you want to place on your home screen, the app draw should close and then you can move the icon into position on the home screen - (not helpful if the app is not in the app draw to start with - hence why we use anycut)

- To recap, when the market and/or contacts icon is on the home screen, and you do nothing else but look at the icon there, it just disappears - right in front of your eyes?

I will look into this further, when I get my scroll with 2.3 on it.

Yep - just using the stock one.

The Market tells me that that one is incompatible with my device. Don't you love the Market? I get the idea now though - Ive just been watching the Go Launcher video.

Yep, I know that but...

You got it!

That is so bizarre - I can really see why this is hacking you off, it's doing the same to me - It will get resolved tho' :D (Charlie/ <Scratches his head>) - does seem to be not liking system based apps - but ok with the tesco one as that is not one.

Have you tired another app like anycut to see if that does the same thing.

UPDATE: I am starting to run out of ideas - but it must be either the launcher or anycut - Unless you just have a gremlin in your scroll - LOL

No. Any suggestions?

How are these shortcuts realised? Is there simply a directory somewhere full of symbolic links? If so, could I make one 'manually' through an adb shell command?

I've put GO Launcher on there now. Seems to work ok and Contacts & Market are just there! No sudden disappearances yet ;-)

Glad to hear they are still there :D. Must be a conflict with anycut and 2.3.1 stock launcher (shame we can not pin point it to which one it is). Never seen this happen before like this. Only seen it when some apps are moved to SD card and on reboot the icon is gone or changed to default android icon.

Will try to replicate this and see if it happens in 2.3.4
