Tablet Stuck on Obtaining IP Address

Postby SpencerJJ » February 17th, 2011, 2:26 pm

Hi, Just received my tablet from ebuyer and having trouble connecting to the wi-fi. It can see my router ok and other devices can connect to my router (home hub 2 - fibre optic) but when i try to connect using the scroll it says obtaining ip address then after a few seconds it says "unsuccessful" ive tried a reboot of both router and scroll and even a factory reset of the scroll and its still the same, ive tried changing security to wep and still no luck, close to sending it back to be honest. My ipod, laptop, repeater and wireless pc upstairs all connect fine.

Ive looked at similar posts and it mentions DCHP, ive looked at it in the router pages but dont know what im looking at, im also thinking maybe something to do with the static ip settings but dont know what info to put into the scroll.

Any help appreciated! Thanks guys

You set DHCP at Settings > Advanced > Home Network > IP Addresses

DHCP just means the hub assigns IP addresses (first come, first serve), otherwise the systems themselves ask for a particular IP (my preference).

Turn off DHCP and see what IP the hub has. If it is blank then put in 192.168.0.1 with subnet of 255.255.255.0 and assign an address range of 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.x (where x is as many devices as you have connected to the hub and/or any number up to 255). If the hub has an address (like maybe 192.168.1.1) then remember the IP range must be within the 192.168.1.x range ie 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.255

Then on the Scroll press the menu button ans goto > Settings > Wireless & Network > WiFi Settings and press the menu button again. You will get the options Scan and Advanced. Select Advanced and you will see use Static Static IP, which will turn off DHCP on the Scroll. You can then set the IP you'd like (in the same range as the router), netmask (always 255.255.255.0 for the 192.168.x.x range), the default gateway (to get to the internet), which is the hub's IP, and DNS IPs (I use 194.168.4.100 and 194.168.8.100 which are Virgin Media's). Then enable WiFi and see if it connects.
