WEP problem

Postby andrewW » February 19th, 2011, 2:28 pm

I have searched the forum for a definitive answer to this but found nothing conclusive! There are references to the Scroll not liking WEP??

I have just returned from a holiday on Tenerife and the hotel's wi-fi was using WEP with a five digit passcode, b2009. When I tried this, the Scroll threw up a passcode error and I was unable to connect. Those around me with netbooks, iPads and smartphones seemed to be managing OK. On returning home I set my own wi-fi to WEP with the same passcode and my Scroll connected immediately.

What pray was I doing wrong?

Possibly the hotel was using a wifi channel the scroll did not like, people are having success on some channels and not others.

Is there some reason for you to use WEP, or is it just that you couldn't connect while at the hotel? I use WPA-PSK [TKIP] and connect just fine and can even walk some 20+ meters down the road and stay connected.

The hotel was using WEP, at home I don't use anything as I live too far from any other living being ;)

Just a thought, would you happen to know which channels the Scroll does not like? At home I use channel 5.

Mine works on any between 1-11 on wpa2(AES) encryption. It doesnt however like dual-channel (300MB) signals as it cant decide which chan to stick to

Employees are like mules. Some you stand in front of and coax them along with a carrot. Some you stand behind and kick them in the arse. The key to management is knowing which mules are which!

My wifi at work is hit and miss and I'm only 10m away from the router. I put the settings in manually and it still won't always work. I just think the wifi within the scroll is a bit below par. I generally find once im connected it's fine (does not drop out).

Thanks both! I agree, the wi-fi sensitivity is not great but in the case of my problem at that hotel, the signal level was 60% but just refused to connect.

My Linux powered Acer One netbook is much better and also likes hotel wi-fi networks :)
