In Need of Tech support -Killing me softly

Postby Scope » February 20th, 2011, 5:01 pm

Hi,
Although I asked this question elsewhere in the "newcomer" section, I do need a bit of clarification in relation to killing off the phone apps in the root.
1, Will I lose any installed apps that I have patiently loaded in
2.Just how much battery "boost" will this give me in hours
3.Am I advised to back up everything first
4.If all this works, and thanks Diego and Charlie in initial post, is it best to try and store apps on SD card or move them there to save load-up times and battery drain on main storage area in internal memory.

If I could have at least two "expert" views on this as some guys on here seem to be "gung ho" and some more cautious with the Scroll.

If it were a PC I would have no real difficulties , however Android is all new to me, and as an ex-marine, anything with more than two working parts is quite difficult !!
Thanks for your patience.

You should always backup before modding system files yes.

If done in the correct order, you should have no issues

I got 35 hours Idle on a test I did after renaming these PMT files.

No you will no lose any installed apps.

Putting apps on the SDCARD or the Internal Memory makes no difference, they are both storage drives so to speak, and you can not move installed apps to the SDCARD nor can you install to the SDCARD.

I believe apps2sd only works on 2.2 or above.

I think Gung Ho works at my local take away (or is it Foo King....)

Anyway, I digress... here's my answers (if they are of any help)

1) No
2) Lots - see previous post by Detection
3) Yes
4) Android 2.1 wont ( as far as I know) run apps from the sdcard. You can, however, store and use media (video/audio) and ebooks on the sdcard. The FBReader ebook reader has an option to select a directory on the sd card for ebook storage. You also wont need the market to update it, just google for "fbreaderj" and you can load the apk file direct from the authors homepage.

I also store all my apps setup files (apk files) in a dedicated folder on my sd card in case I need to reinstall them at any point (Also have a backup on NAS in case the sd gets wiped)

Mitre: You could try "unmounting" the nand, the prog should then see the sd card as it is intended and back up to it.
(Menu hard button/settings/sdcard/unmount nand).

Dont forget to mount it back after youre done.
