Is there a way for it to find books saved on a SD card. I've searched the forum and can't see an answer.

According to another forum, and my experience, Kindle will only download stuff via Amazon, it doesn't import.

The kindle can read your own books ive got at least a hundred in mine. what you need to do is make sure they are in .mobi/prc format, i use the fantastic Calibre e book software to convert them.
Once you have your books converted just place them in the /nand/kindle folder, open up the Kindle app and there they are.

Yes confirming the above, just yesterday I added some books to my Kindle app on the Scroll. They were in .mobi format and worked a charm.

The size of a book is usually 1MB (depending on size) and I'm putting a few on which I aim to read rather than a whole large amount I won't get round to reading.

I FOUND A FIX!
Heres what you do to get whyspersync across different devices
First using calibre
select a book then-edit metadata (you may need to re-type auther and title feilds for the search to work)
the most important thing you need in the metada is the ISBN number of the book-clik OK

now when you look in the calibre library folder for that book you will now see a file called metadata.opf
copy and paste 2 files to my kindle content(on PC) THE BOOK and THE metadata.opf

copy just the book to second device
open book in pc read some then close
open scroll open same book and there you go it syncs
i have only tested furthest page read so far and it syncs both ways
