Scroll won't even Factory Reset

despite having rooted more than half a dozen Phones now with no problems,
my mates Scroll 2 is driving me nuts!
currently it won't even do a Factory Reset, it just hangs at boot screen (is there a hard-reset option)

it is a Scroll 2 (SCRO51951), Firmware & Baseband of v 1.02, Kernal 2.6.29, Android 2.1

I got invlolved when he was having problems with the market,
and despite having read all the very good tutorials here could not begger all to work (so I went for reset !)

first I tried the Rooting .. all seemed fine, Zroot went on ok (but it did not reboot after rooting),
Teminal Emulator is available and accepting commands.
then I went for Clockwork recovery in the hope I could get a new Rom on here.
Emulater ran ok, accepted the commands as in the guide for the recovey image, then just sat there.

on shutdown/restart the Scroll boots ok, but will NOT go into Clockwork whatever keypresses I try,
so despite emulator seeming fine this fool of a tablet has not even accepted a clockwork flashing !

in desperation I have even tried my ZTE Blade Recovery Manager to flash the clockwork.img,
and Universal Adnroot for thr rooting, but no joy at all.

any help and suggestions would be greatfully received,
but please don't be offended if I do not reply for some hours as i am going for a well earned game of golf 1

There are lot of people havin issues with clockwork on anything other than the orignal 7" scroll (I think it says this in my how to somewhere) Until we find/smeone builds a working replacement for newer scrolls you are stuck with the standard recovery im afraid (someone has posted all the originals so you can flash them back)

@warpedflash,
thanks for that, I shall try that build.prop suggestion.
as I have said, the rooting has taken ok, but for some reason the clockwork has not ...
when I issue the flash_image command in the emulator, what response should I get ?
as it takes the command ok with no errors, than just sits there at the prompt

That's all it does. It only takes a second or two. As I said the current recovery may not work as its only known to work on the original 7" scroll. You can go nuts with clockworkmod versions (teamtelechips versions may work as that is where our original one came from) or go back to teh stock recovery for now

I did the build.prop ok but it made no noticable difference.
if it still won't accept a flash of clockwork, allow the market fix nor even do a factory reset what use is it to anyone ?
an Android device that cannot access the market is a contradiction in terms.

I have rooted phones from the 2.5" xperia x10 mini to tha 3.5 Blade with no problems at all.
and how on earth screen size on Scroll can affect the application of 'fixes' that should not be needed in the first place is beyond me.
the very fact that the fool thing will not even factory reset itself suggests to me it is faulty.
thanks for trying to help,
but I think I am going to give up on this and advise my mate to return it under warranty as not fit for purpose.

What happens when you hold power and volume up? Do you have /system/etc/install-recovery.sh?
Not fit for purpose is hard to argue if the device never claimed to have market access or the ability to be tweaked. It probably did do what it said on the tin.

thanks folks,
I would tend to agree with Dave though as both power on/vol up and factory reset from settings just reboot
to the white 'Scroll' screen where it completely hangs up ... this is what bugs me the most !

as to doing 'what is says on the tin' I would differ in that when apps centre says an app is only on the market,
and then offers a link to the market (where download then fails) - this link should then work, else why offer it ?
otherwise Scroll should make it abundantly clear that the device cannot do this, fix or no fix.

I will take advice from my mate on what to do next,
but personally I would say to Scroll 'goodbye and thanks for all the fish'
