Should I root? could i end up with a brick

Hi
My third post in 2 days and my last for a few days. Received my capacitive 7" scroll yesterday and it is absolutely brilliant.
I have installed apps to do the things I want to do that is read books, watch movie files. I am just in the process of setting up my laptop/games machine so that I can access them over wifi directly without need for router.
I also want to set up GPS and I am talking to someone about this, and to do this i need to root my tablet.
Bearing in mind it is new, I dont really want to end up with a brick. Can I have some advice as to whether it is possible or likely that I will ruin the thing completely an be unable to recover the situation simply rooting it?
I have firmware 1.02 and would look to use the rooting thread in the "how to" section. As far as I can see his should work with android 2.3 without a problem generally.
So the questions are..
1.... Can I damage the thing irreparable or should i be able to reset to factory defaults at worst.
2.... Are there benefits to rooting that I havent noticed.....it seems most people wouldnt dream of not rooting.
If anyone is happy to give me a couple of quick answers I would appreciate it.
Regards
Brian
