Dead to the world

Hi Guys,

I have searched the forums but cant find a specific answer to my issue.

Just bought a S/H Scroll 7. Does not charge from either wall socket or PC. No lights visible on device when USB or 5V connected.

Have had the sucker apart using the tear down instructions from this forum, and it looks like the bottom circuitboard (HDMI, USB, 5V) may be fried (There seems to be some solder on one of the bits that does not look like a manufacturing process - Wonder if the original owner tried a fix?)

Anyone else had this issue (and a fix?) or can I get a spare part to fix this tab?

Only got it to fiddle with as I have an Android phone already, but wanted a bigger screen for AVI's etc.

Not the end of the world as it only cost me a whole £10.00 - rofl.

Dont know if its still under warrantly or not - Is there a serial number somewhere on these things that I can use the check?

Any help greatly appreciated!

<EDIT> - If anyone has a broken one on offer (Cracked screen etc) that I can use the parts from, let me know. If the price is right I will have it for parts.

<EDIT 2> - Tonight, I have taken it apart and plugged it in to the power with the back off. I multimetered the battery terminals and got 0v going into the battery. Changing to a USB power cable I get some voltage on the multimeter. Does this mean the PSU is stuffed? Should I leave it on over night on the USB to see if I get a charged battery? Will it cause harm if I use a usb desktop wall charger (3 pin plug) and not a USB to PC cable?

Cheers

Mike.

maybe same thing happened to your's though I don't know what version scroll version you have I have version 2, only 1 usb and it dose not charge from the usb, you can only use the mains charger don't try this if you want to keep your warranty.
also you have to have a steady hand with soldering iron and do only as a last resort.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, It looks like all may be lost. I left the device on all night charging via USB from a wall socket charger. Although there seemed to be voltage getting to the battery when the device was carefully taken apart, a whole 8 hours USB charge made no difference at all.

I guess that not only does it not charge, but does not turn on at all.

When I bought it it was sold as seen and in very poor condition (The screen cover is scratched with squares and lines and the case is battered) - You pays ya money and takes ya choice, but for less than £10 it was worth a punt.

I have contacted the Manufacturer on the off-chance there may still be some warranty left, but its in such bad condition I don't think it will be covered.

Does anyone want spares for their device (Battery looks in good condition as does the main circuit board and LCD) - Just the cost of postage (If I cant get it replaced under warranty)

Mike.

I had that a few weeks ago, returned mine to Maplins and they offered to refund/replace. The manager did say he had quite a few returned with non-charging issues.

I eventually decided on the Viewpad 7 instead (got it for the same price as I originally paid as they had no scrolls in stock).

If you are getting 0v on the battery when the normal charger is plugged in it could mean either the charger is knackered or the centre pin on the charging socket has become detatched from the scrolls mainboard (more likely)
The USB socket will charge the scroll, but extremely slowly.

As i already have an Android phone and an Archos 101 tablet, its no great issue. Its Just the size is ideal for taking out and about to the coffee shops etc.

I returned the tablet direct to storage options about 10 days ago.

Today (Just now infact) - I have taken delivery of a refurbished replacement. - EPIC service concidering it was S/H and I could not prove it was under warranty!

What outstanding customer service! - Well pleased.

Now to fill it with apps and eBooks! :)

Nice one, bet the person that sold it to you for a tenner, wished that they had done what you did.

Have fun with your Scroll, remember to do a full backup if you are going to try any of the mod and/or hacks -

Enjoy :D

Dont think i will try any mods just yet (Except the market place mod) - going to use it as a travel tablet instead of lugging the delicate Archos 101 about.

It seems quite a capable device! - Not bad for a total for £14.92 (inc postage back to SO)
