Email Problems

Hello everyone. New member here looking for a little help!!
Just purchased a 7" scroll Tablet from E-buyer. They dont specify exactly what model on the invoice. But its Capacitive Touch. 2G Flash Memory.
My problem is unable to send e-mail which was one of the prime reasons for the purchase. I am able to recieve my mail with no problem using the pre loaded email prog (or app?) I just entered my Gmail account and password and I was away.
Unable to find a way of sending a mail, I came across the pre loaded app "Calender" . when trying to "open" this I was presented with a screen asking for my e mail and password again,it also said "You can configure an exchange account in just a few steps" and a box to tick which said "send email from this account by default" .
After entering my mail and password details, it took me to the next screen which listed three items. "Domain\Username (which showed the first part of my mail address) (Leaving out Gmail.com). Password....... Server which had "gmail.com) It also had a box pre ticked "use secure connection". Next screen showed "checking incoming server settings. but then all i get is "Setup could not finish. Unable to open connection to server"
What am I doing wrong?? Any suggestion would be appreciated.

For a google account use the exchange settings.

Your login is your email address in full
the server is m.google.com
your password is the password you normally use for gmail.
You don't need to worry about the domain bit
leave the secure connection setting checked.
