Help - Can't find a Contacts/Address folder on new 7" Excel

Postby Keith53 » December 29th, 2011, 3:42 pm

Hi - Can anyone help solve a problem on my new 7" excel Scroll tablet which appears to be missing a contact or address folder/application which you can link to the email account. E.g. I need to type in the email address every time I send a new email and also there is no where to store contact details...

This seems to a very basically function and I can't why its missing or how to resolve. Only purchased the Excel after the glowing review on the Gadget show... I hoping someone will be able able to help ...

Hi,

I don't have a solution except to explain that the contacts app is linked with the dialer on an Android phone, since the Excel is a tablet with no 3G/phone capability, I would guess thats why its not installed.

There are contact and business card apps on the market but a true contact/dialer like Go Contacts probably won't install on a tablet like this. You many find one that works though.

I agree its an omission, and there's a few other posts like yours. Worst case alternative would be to use web mail via the browser where all your contacts should be available.

I think its fairly tricky to install the stock contacts app, unless anyone else knows otherwise?

Hi thanks for the advice

Having looked at other non 3g tablets .. they all have a contact feature even though they don't have a phone so I can't understand why this has been left out... it seems such a simple basic requirement...!

Surely everyone's who has a Scroll wants to use email and avoid re-typing email addresses?

I left a message for the Tec support to call me .. but no response as yet.

Thanks again

Help - Can't find a Contacts/Address folder on new 7" Excel

As a temporary "quick fix" you could download a "list" or "notes" type app and make a list of the contacts. It's then a simple task of copying the address you need to email!

This bugged me enough to take another look at it...

If you follow the instructions below then Gmail will pick up your Google contacts so you it will auto complete as you type the name in the To: address.

"I don't use google mail" - Well nothing to stop you creating a dummy account and importing all your contacts in there. You could collate your mail accounts into that via pop3 or just use the default email client which will STILL use your google contacts anyway!

If you install the calender and contacts sync adapters as found here: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=1775. In CalenderFix.zip are two apks. install BOTH of them.

You can also install the "Accounts and Sync" from the above or use "AnyCut" application from the market to add a shortcut to "Accounts and Sync" which is already on the phone but hidden. Configure this to sync contacts etc with your chosen google account. Or even ADD one if you haven't already, I made a special new gmail account just for the scroll since it is shared with my whole family, I then linked it to my Samsung phone first before linking it to the scroll...Worked fine.

Thats it, once the sync is complete start typing the name in GMail/Email and it will auto suggest your contacts.

Better still! You can also install Go Contacts EX via apk (Market will hide it from the scroll, just google "Go Contacts EX 2.05 apk"), which allow you to manage all your contacts and even email direct from the app! Of course you can still manage all your contacts from the web browser in google.

For my 2p worth, I actually have a web shortcut on my home screen which goes to my hotmail and I use the web client, yeah its not exactly a "push" client but I don't like any of the mail clients anyway :-)

Still not ideal but better than a slap in the chops I say, hope that helps someone.

Thanks for the help .. I will try this as had some luck with BT Yahoo mail this afternoon which seems to be operating in a similar way... as you say its still not quite the same as a push client set up which i understand most other tablets have. I also spoke to the Storage solutions tec guy today but he could only offer to pass on to their development guys for a further review.

Thanks again.

Yes, my original solution, to use a web shortcut is pretty basic and NOT at all push client...

However, if you follow the steps in my previous post to get your google account sync working with Go Contacts, and use the built in email/gmail...That IS more like a proper "push" (actually it polls, so is that pull?) client, basically the only downside is you have to import and store your address book in Google/Gmail rather than ON the device. The inherent advantage though is that its always backed up "in the cloud" (I hate that poncy, ubiquitous phrase), bascially its always synchronised and stored on Google's servers.

With everything installed, Go Contacts is your address book, you can choose Gmail or the default Email client (link that up to BT Yahoo) and email people from your address book.

Once setup it should be THE solution i.e. Address book/contacts which can link to Email! As I said, Go Contacts lets you lookup someone, just pick "send email" directly, I think its what you were looking for originally.

Just a shame its such a faff and not on the device by default.

Hope it works for you.
