Obvious newbie

Hello
I have had my scroll android 2.1 for 6 months, slow learner, so I downloaded lots of things that did not work and some that did. I have managed to put some photos and a lot of manuals (pdf) on to a card and view them with ES File explorer.
I had downloaded lots of stuff that did not do what I thought it would and so I decided a factory reset was in order. After the factoryre-set I am no longer able to view pdfs but can still view photos. Ihave also lost an app with a compass and accelerometer (can't remember the name) which I believe relied on GPS and so was pointless anyway.
Is there a way of doing a factory reset that would put it back to "new".
How do I get a pdf viewer back?
I would love to get some kind of navigation aid (downloaded maps perhaps) working but have not so far had any luck with this.
I have not done the clockwork mod thing but, considering my, by now obvious, lack of expertise would it be a good idea?
Thanks for any suggestions
Dave

Hello Daveydub,
Sounds like you are a "suck-it-and-see" type of person and have got yourself a little confused.
Regarding the Clockwork Mod thing I suggest you leave it well alone for the time being because if you don't do things right then you will screw up your Scroll a lot worse than it sounds you might have done already.

I don't know your particular model Scroll as mine is an Excel but I don't believe any of the Scrolls so far have come with GPS so what you must be refering to is a WIFI based location app. One I like a lot is GPS-1 Click direction which is WIFI based. However, I think Google Play will tell you it is incompatible with the Scroll (works great on my Excel) you can download it to your PC from here and then sideload it to your Scroll: http://www.4shared.com/android/-77Z6JP6 ... on_20.html but be aware of the potential risks when downloading files from 3rd party sites like this as you are responsible for your own virus protection.

"GPS-1 Click" works well with the "text to speech" engine and you can download this to your PC so that GPS 1-click can speak to you and tell you a traffic route from where you are to wherever you want to go - just like a proprietory GPS but without the nags to - "At the first opportunity do a U turn..."

Regarding your loss of the PDF reader you can download that from Google Play for free: https://play.google.com/store/search?q= ... der&c=apps

Providing you haven't deleted anything important then this should give you back what you are missing.

By the way, although it is tempting to try every free app around, try to only download what is useful to you, otherwise your boot up times will simply go on forever.

Hi Trashcooky and thank you.
Googleplay will not let me download as I do not have an android phone. I did find Mantano reader free on slide me which I was able to install and it works. I am now able to view my manuals again.
Should I be able to install from Googleplay using some kind of workaround method?
I did think that my scroll included GPS and if you hold that belief and hunt the web, there is much info out there to confirm it (all wrong) but eventually I concluded that as there was no way in the settings to turn GPS on/off I did not have it. At this point someone mentioned a GPS dongle but reading these forums I think that these will not work with Scroll 2.1. I then thought that I could forget navigation and carry on learning my scroll but someone mentioned wi-fi navigation. I will make GPS 1click my project for later this evening and let you know how I get on (I am excited).
I am glad you agree with me about clockwork mod, it all looked a bit scary to me.
I did not delete anything from the scroll (I had not worked out how to) so I thought that factory restore would just put it back to "out the box" condition.
Thanks again
Dave

Hi Daveydub,

I did not make it very clear in my first post that the files you can download from 4Shared, you can choose to download onto your main PC and then connect your tablet to the PC using USB and from here you can shift the files from your PC to your tablet (SD Card) and then install to the tablet directly. You may need to make sure that "Unknown Sources" is ticked in application settings. This is a work-around for apps that may work with your Scroll but Google won't let you download because it says incompatible with your device.
As far as downloading Adobe PDF reader from Google Play, you should be able to do this by directly downloading it to your tablet as it should be compatible with your device. If you can't then try the Adobe site for direct download of the android version using sideloading again.

Just a quick mention, I thought that Adobe PDF reader for android only works on 2.2 and above. There are other PDF readers available that work on 2.1 - Just can not remember the name of them.
