To Tether (or Not) How to please !!

Postby praed0r » January 29th, 2011, 6:40 pm

All I need now is install to SD and tether for web access at work

I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy Portal, f/w 2.1

Is there an easy way to get this to share it's web access with my Scroll wirelessly or via USB ?

Any suggestions welcome

I'm looking into this myself, if you have the ability to create a wireless access point from your phone then with a little work you can access it from your tablet. The issue is, the firmware blocks the wifi settings page from seeing Ad-hoc networks, I'm looking into a way around that (for precisely the same reasons as you).

Let me know if you have already worked out how to set up your Galaxy as a wifi access point or not, if not, i'll see if I can advise on that too while i'm at it.

Hi there,

I've not got that far yet, I remember seeing somewhere that some Samsung f/w have settings that allow for ad-hoc settings - not for this phone though. Seemingly some of the settings can be "duped" on the phone to allow connection, but it looks complicated and highly risky, I was hoping for somethig simpler that does not require an in depth knowledge of Linux.

I am still searching, if I come across anything I will post here.

Got my phone acting as wifi hub and it works fine with my eeepc netbook, the netbook logs on and I can browse the web effortlessly, but the damn scroll does'nt see the broadcast at all - very frustrating - - any ideas anyone ???

The problem is due to the scroll not seeing ad-hoc networks, now I've rooted my scroll I plan to go through the wifi configuration files and create a patch later tonight/tomorrow so that ad-hoc networks can be used too.

Wow... my eyes are fixed on the screen too! I was five clicks away from buying a hideously expensive MiFi router, which I really can't afford, and I'm hoping this will come together!

I went down that route as well, messing around with wpa_supplicant and wpa_supplicant.conf and nearly destroying my Wifi in the process. If you can create this, you are my new demi-god!

The issue is, you're actually editing the wrong files! I've been pulling apart the scroll conf files based on the origional specification for 2.1 so I've got a pretty good feel for what needs to be changed. As soon as I've got a working fix, I'll put a how-to up and link to it for you all :)

Update :

  1. Have located the files that actually control wireless access/connection on the scroll.
  2. Have located a non-working (for the scroll at least) example of how to enable ad-hoc support
  3. Have got together all the info for setting up an android development/build environment on my ubuntu build tomorrow (needed to compile the new file(s) needed to make this work.)
  4. Am in the process of asking for/trying to find a clean copy of the source file I need to do a blank test (to make sure it's the right source) and to begin coding in the changes
  5. Have managed to both completely disable, and re-enable my scroll's wifi capability within a 25 minute window (at least I know it can be re-enabled if I screw it up mind you!)

As it's now almost 4am, I'm going to call it a night, however I thought that those of you who are interested in this fix would like to know something is indeed going on!
