General Question hopefully you can help

Postby paul2978 » February 24th, 2011, 9:11 am

Hi All,

bought my first scroll yesterday.......for the price its very good. i wanted it most for a color kindle reader and pdf reader :) love my books!

I have a few issues that hopefull you might be able to answer.

I have the newer 8 inch version.

1) Will the case and keyboard fit into this new version or can I use any other type of USB keyboard?

2) Can a Mouse be used with the device?

3) I have installed dropbox but it doesnt seem to connect i can see my files/pdfs but unable to download them or open them.

4) I am unable to install Skyfire as replacement browser I have installed opera, when I go to the market place it says its not compatable? I think its due to the fact im using android 2.1 unsure yet but working on this.

5) the wifi aint all that great often will "appear connected" but actually isnt. - this has happened with 2 different networks while my iphone and laptop are both still connected. most noticable this happens when the device goes into power saving mode. Iv know laptops to do this before any suggestions from anyone? drive update possible?

6) Alternative operating systems - I was hoping of installing ubuntu possibley or something along those lines there is a netbook version which i use on my notebook - is this at all possible or viable? I tried using my usb flash drive which has ubuntu live version on it but it doesnt work is the an option to change the boot bios options?

Obivously I have asked alot of questions here but if anyone can just answer 1 of the questions that would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Paul

1) No, they are for the 7" not he 8"

2) Yes, Ive not tried one myself, but others have. Perhaps search for '*mouse' for more info

3)If you unstall Samba (get it here) you will see your Scroll as any other system on your network through the wireless

4) There are no end of market issues, but there are other avenues. Do a search for '*market'

5) I believe it is a setting in the wireless to shut down when the unit goes into stand-by. CHeck all teh WiFi & Network settings, and while you're on the wireless setup page, hit the menu for more advanced options, like static IP, etc.

6) So far DJ Steve is trying to get 2.2 or 3.0 to go on the Scroll, but is missing some drivers. I'm not aware of any other OS research in progress.

Welcome to the madhouse!

Lemme see now:

1) They are for the 7" only as far as I know. Use the forum search function inputting "keyboard" and you'll come across a few posts where there are alternatives.
2) Not sure
3) Dropbox should work, do you have a pdf reader installed?
4) I believe Skyfire does work, check the forum for references to it. There are various issues with the android market not working, do a search for "market fix".
5) There is an option in advanced (wifi settings/menu hard button/advanced) that stops the wifi sleeping, might help. Also if they are dual-channel routers (300MB/s) the scroll might dislike them. What channel are the routers working on? is it between 1-11? ( wont connect to 12 or above)
6) There has been recent discussion on this in the forum. It may be possible but no one has succeeded yet. Again, the search function is your friend :D

Note to self: Damn, Diego types faster than me!

HTH.
Enjoy the forum and your scroll. Have a read through as much of the forum as you can, there's lots of info in here.

3) I have installed dropbox but it doesnt seem to connect i can see my files/pdfs but unable to download them or open them.

I have unistalled the application downloaded from the web and transfered the file via usb to the tablet then reinstalled - dropbox installs correctly and iv logged in - and can see my files. They are PDFS and I have adobe PDF installed however I still cannot download the files.

An unknown problem occured - been searching on dropbox forums.

Could it be that dropbox needs permissions on the files?

Tried it with 3 different networks.

Bethere bebox at home.
3g mifi

Virgin network - round the girlfriends house.

Browses the internet fine.

Any suggestions where to try next?

@ paul2978 - I had that issue the other day - and the problem was there was 18mb of cache for dropdox which meant there was not enough room on Nand to download a file - try clearing the cache in the dropbox setting also make sure there is enough free space available on Nand (Not the removable SD card) but the internal memory.

No All Iv installed is kindle 8mb and Opera Browser.

I assume nand is the home directory?

Iv installed ASTRO file manager and had a search about and there appears to be no real reason for it.

Is there a way I can work out what version of android im running I will raise a support ticket with Dropbox.

There is a label on the outside it the brand new 8" but id like to know for future reference.

Thanks

Paul
