I'm confused and not too happy :O(

Postby player1 » March 13th, 2011, 1:03 pm

Hi and thanks for the forum - I've just bought an 8"Scroll and I'm having a few problems I'm afraid (which I didn't expect to be honest). I'm okay with pc's and don't normally get stuck but this time I'm having to ask for help despite searching here and in other sites.
Firmware v1.02 Kernel 2.6.29 Build 2.1
Okay I don't have a SD card an hadn't expected to need one in truth - the unit is meant to have 6gb spare and that is more than I need. I've read posts here saying that movies,music etc need to go on a card as it's easier (well not if you don't have one it isn't) so I've been struggling with that so far (is this something that should be complex ?). When I connect the tablet to my XP pc and then cancel windows trying to install software,I then mount from the tablet - good so far,but then I'm presented with a F drive (6gb with what I assume is the operating system but no specific folders for doc movies of music) and 3 extra removable disks (which when clicked ask for a disk wtf ?). So I'm lost !
Okay next please - I bought the unit to view open office docs for my course work,I again wrongly assumed it would seem that this task would be simple,ut-huh no sir. Microsoft Office is mentioned here but Open Office is not,I've seen a suggestion of converting to PDF but then again I've no idea where to put the PDF and what to open it with. I did install Androffice but that just crashes or hangs and now I don't know how to remove it - I'm getting angry now !
Please help me as I'm close to a nervous breakdown - sob sniff,wimper,whine.

I use Open Office Document Reader that I got from;

http://www.appbrain.com/app/openoffice- ... che.reader

As to removing Androffice, open the Android "Settings" app, and tap on Applications, then Manage Applications, tap on Androiifice and select uninstall, should work.

Hope that helps

When you mount the internal storage (6GB) you can create your own folders to put whatever you like inside, that is just a storage card - the other disks you are presented with are the locked OS drives which are as default not for messing with - if you want to play with them, you need to root the scroll (See tutorials section)

Once you create your folders on the 6GB, you can then use a file explorer, or music player etc to navigate to them and open your media from there.

Your other issue should be repairable from the above post

Hey thanks Bu55man - that was kinda easy wasn't it ! Sorry I was up until 4 this morning trying to sort this out.Okay so that application is now gone,not sure why it didn't work but I'll move on.
Detection - thank you for making me aware of the reason behind the drives in explorer,I shall leave well alone for now at least - I've created 3 folders in the main folder and installed Root Explorer - and now have a msg saying - Root Access Failed - Root access could not be obtained because su failed with the following msg -
su: uid 10034 not allowed to su
Make sure you granted root permission when requested by superuser - if you did try rebooting - Root explorer will continue in non-root mode.
I was then able to open the music folder and play the contents - however the movie I tried to play via Root Explorer didn't play - I guess I'm being thick here but why does the album I just loaded onto the unit now show up in the Music icon on the desktop but didn't previously,at least until I installed Root ? Also despite the movie not playing via root that too is displayed via the video icon - which wasn't previously - at least I'm pretty sure. Am I better of with another file manager ? Just one more point please - I should be okay with link provided to view Open Office docs but what about creating docs ? Many thanks again - P1

Hey player1, glad to help. It's taken me quite a while to get used to Android's quirks, especially when using a tablet. As for editing or creating Open Office docs, I haven't had any luck finding an app to do that yet, though I must admit I tend to use my tablet to look up reference docs I've loaded on to it. Without carrying a keyboard (even the Maplin keyboard & case I find too bulky), any substantial creation is just too much tapping for me. To create text, I just use Note Classic Free, and then transfer into an Open Office doc on my computer when I'm back home. If you're interested, you can find it at;

http://www.appbrain.com/app/note-classi ... lassicfree

The other app you might find useful for viewing docs, is the PDF Reader, again available at;

http://www.androidzoom.com/android_appl ... _heqc.html

Hope that helps.

Thanks again Bu55man - I'm still having problems alas. I installed the viewer and assume that I need to access the open office files thru a file manager ? On the start screen it says Openoffice Doc reader opens automatically if another app wants to open an Openoffice doc - I've tried Astro and Root Explorer but they didn't seem to work - what file manager are you using please ?

Edit - Astro opens the file via the reader but the text is a jumbled mess and the bottom is says it can't open the website - of course it's not a web site,it's a document (unless the hotlinks within the document are confusing it ?) -

I understand your frustration, you seem to be having the same sort of problems I had. Based on my limited experience, this is what I do. I use File Expert by xcxin available from;
http://www.appbrain.com/app/xcxin.filexpert

When you launch it, it auto loads the /nand directory. If you have loaded your files here (or navigate to the subdirectory if you have created one), just tap on the ODT file and it should launch the Open Office Document Reader automatically. If its a PDF you tap on it should launch the Adobe PDF reader automatically. In both cases if there are any other applications installed that are set to open the ODT or PDF, you'll get a choice list, not an auto open. In which case just tap on Open Office Document Reader or Adobe PDF Reader as appropriate. If your files are on the SDcard, use the Up Dir button to go up to /. Find the /sdcard directory and tap on it. Follow the same as above.

If you're using the default email package to view POP3 emails you send to an account you set up on Scroll, the ODT attachment should be shown with an open button, that will launch the reader.

As a suggestion of other apps I've found useful, they are;

Dolphin Browser HD - http://www.appbrain.com/app/dolphin-bro ... nnyBrowser

AVG Free antivirus for Android - http://www.avg.com/us-en/antivirus-for-android

Convert Anything Free (for metres to feet etc.)- http://www.appbrain.com/app/convert-any ... rtAnything

ES Task Manager (for killing apps) - http://www.appbrain.com/app/es-task-man ... askmanager

Documents To Go (for viewing MS office files) - http://www.appbrain.com/app/documents-t ... z.docstogo

TuneWiki (for media playing and shoutcast radio streaming) - http://www.appbrain.com/app/*tunewiki-s ... er.android

YouTube Viewer - Found via http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817528

And for a bit of light amusement;

Chess by Aart Bik - http://www.appbrain.com/app/chess-for-a ... roid.chess

Backgammon Free - http://www.appbrain.com/app/backgammon- ... gammonfree

As with any apps not downloaded from the Android Market, like me, you have to accept the risk, but having the AVG Free anti-virus package gives me some reassurance. Most of the above I found as a result of ferreting around various app stores, and of course the great amount of help in this forum, which saved my sanity a few times!

Hey thanks Bu55man - I understand now,having used windows only since W95 it's hard for me to adapt. Windows for all it's faults is easy to use and makes things simple. I'm not sure if my old version of Open Office is the problem or not,I run an older version because the latest offering has problems (at least for me) with spell check. The reader opens the file fine but is obviously having trouble decoding it as I'm presented with a page of numbers,not text.
Again and I don't know why I can't synch my device with appbrain,I'm registered but when I attempt to install it says the phone is not synced yet and suggests I install appbrain app market which I agree to do,then it just hangs for a while until a failed download msg appears. I've rebooted several times now but every time the same result.
As a work around I installed officesuit viewer from a torrent and then converted the Open Office doc via Google Docs - the file now opens in Office reader - sorted. I still think that updating Open Office might solve the issue but I have all of my stuff in Google Documents so converting them is simple. I like simple.

Thanks again for your advice and the links - once I figure out why Appbrain won't let me in I'll snatch some of those.

I'll keep an eye out for your posts - and look into the issues you have noted in your signature - now it's time to do some course work,which is incidentally why I bought this tablet - :O)

Okay thanks again Bu55man. I've been busy studying and working so not had a real good chance to play with the unit. However,it's up and running okay with the SD card an the keyboard has now also arrived. A few of quick questions/observations -

1. I've searched for an answer to this but can't find one - I have deleted a movie but it still appears as recycled via the movie button on the desktop - how do I permanently remove this please ?
2. When I view the SD card via my pc it shows various temp folders - is that right,doesn't seem good to me ?
3. I did install another movie player (not sure of the name now) but this appeared to make movies hang after exiting a film and then re-accessing it - once I'd removed the program and just used the default movie player this issue was solved. Is this conflict normal and if so,is there a work around ?
4. The keyboard appears to be troublesome - one key has popped off already and the delete key intermittently sticks down. I'm considering returning it but suspect I'd get a replacement the same. Also the folder requires another cover in order to transport it safely - any suggestions please ?

That's all for now :) Thanks again - p1
