Preliminary new scroll users FAQ

Postby Mac » January 29th, 2011, 7:18 pm

a stickied post or extra FAQ for new to scroll forum users.

covering the basics and often asked questions. read only, modified by admin and mods.

details of where in the users account to add firmware version to signature, and the good reasons for doing so.

a disclaimer for not just the risks involved in modding (not that its a big deal with the clockwork mod) but also about official storage options updates possibly not working after modding. if you the user wants to use the official SO updates, think hard before applying our forums mods, and if there is an issue to raise that issue as a bug, and not charge in on the offensive. asking nicely is the way forward.
fonefixer: If you modify your Scroll in any way, shape or form with regard to the recovery area ( ie root and install clockworkmod recovery) your scroll tablet will not be covered under warranty!

links to the most handy mods, ie. rooting, build.prop, etc. either via links to the posts themselves (obviously the first page) or the name of the app to use eg. z4root. not just links or apps either, explain what the mod will do, so users can decide if that mod is for them.
MartinFXDX & Diego: recommended and/or required apps. best to add a link to threads covering both those topics, otherwise this document starts turning into massive read. each one would be a big post, and i say this as every item *should briefly* describe the apps use.
homewld: Something about android market would be useful. (the market might work, it might not, if your lucky it will)

how to use the search to find posts, ie. not getting the "to common a word" msgs.
and the need to read all the posts in a thread, not skipping thru it and then asking the same questions over.

info on things like SDcards, the class ratings, and the need for higher class cards for demanding applications like media.

im sure theres more that could be included, so feel free to add what you think should go in there.

i'll update this post with amendments

might it be added that altho we have our forum listed on the official SO web page, we arent affiliated to SO. we are a group of users (having found SO support so poor, that) we do our own.

please feel free to add anything else, surely i havent covered everything in my original post.

I could not comment directly on the support service level from SO - as I have never used them.

For 'Stock' support, SO do seem good, from what I have heard, they support their product as is (i.e Not modified).

It's important to remember, this forum is not really for basic support, that is for SO to do, the forum is for users that want to do way more to the scroll than keep it in a 'Just out of the box' condition.

I have used SO support on a number of occasions, and have found them to be very helpful.....

BUT ( As you can see its a big BUT!) If you modify your Scroll in any way, shape or form with regard to the recovery area ( ie root and install clockworkmod recovery) you will not be covered under warranty!

Cue the online lawyers that say "ah but, if you consider the case of eejit v modder on the 29th Feb 1990 at the CCA......"

Basically, if you want to mod it, do so, it will invalidate your warranty

There are people who work for SO that monitor these forums.....

with inconsistencies in the official SO FAQ (ie. this device has no mic) and hasn't been changed (that i know of) and the lack of the source code, i'd say the support is quite poor (my opinion only). eg. an FAQ should be updated with the frequently asked questions, and not stale like SOs FAQ.

plus i was just testing the thread wasnt locked as it has had no replies ;)

as for the "this forum is not really for basic support", hence my "we arent affiliated to SO". we, off our own backs, are filling the space SO seemingly doesn't want to do. possibly a poor choice of words, but again, my opinion. i acknowledge i don't speak for the community.
new users should know we're not here to provide the support services on StorageOptions behalf, we do it because it's asked here often, and yes, we're more interested in the things SO don't provide, like a better software solution than is default. fw 1.02 might be an improvement, but android 2.1 updates aren't really the best way forward (2.2 is). so far they wont provide it, so we have good guys like dj_steve and warpedflash taking the lead (all props to them too). if we have all this info together for "new scroll users/forum readers" benefit, then it's a good solid step forward.

im happy to remove any part of my messages if its felt it damages any relationship with SO, but as stated these are just my opinions, and not those of the scrolltabletforums

I agree entirely, this forum is filling a gap that SO should be dealing with. I must say I am 99% certain that SO employees are active here. It is their choice not to identify themselves, but in my view they should be asked by the forum admin /mods to so do in order to improve customer relations.
There are people on here that know a damn sight more about Android than I do, but my point is we all give our free time to assist others in any way we can. SO employees get paid for what little, if any, they seem to do in the way of software support.

Just my 2p worth......

As a very new user (I don't get my Sroll until Monday  ) this idea would be most welcome.

Not sure if this was also intended by the OP but I would love to see a Sticky on "Recommended Apps". Maybe "recommended" isn't the right word but a list of the best (for new users) apps for the most common functions. Say a choice of 2 - 4 options per category? And where they can be downloaded.

I think this would get new users off to a good start so they can actually start using the device without spending the first day trawling forums just to get fairly basic functionality.

As I said, I haven't actually got my Scroll yet so this post may well be wide of the mark or at least premature but from what I have read so far the Scroll needs a fair bit of non standard software to be really usefull. At the very least such a sticky would give confidence to new or prospective users.

And provide endless opportunities for the forum stalwarts to disagree as to which apps should be included in the lists

Sorry if this has already been suggested - I DID do a search first!
