You are too kind Mitre. I can't do android coding like most of you guys but I love to share what I know. Knowledge should be free to everyone, but unfortunately there are too many commercial enterprises out there that want to hold us all to ransom.

i have never really spent much time doing things like this and now with the tablets and the Kids it makes sense for me to start putting the dvds etc to hard drive and onto cards. Time is a commodity you cant buy back and without people like you and charlie suggsy89 blueagle69 and all the other contributors sorry if missed you out i would spend hours working it all out doing it twice any way thats enough back slapping see you on the forum

@Trashcooky: Great guide, but having played with HandBrake on numerous occasions over many years, the output it generates on default settings doesn't even come close to what H264 as a standard is capable of, and it's simply not tweakable enough to get there with custom settings either as it doesn't allow the control or usage of some of x264's advanced and very useful features.

It's clear that the HandBrake developers have totally ignored all of the fine advice and recommendations given by the main x264 developer, Dark Shikari, on his blog page over the years when it comes to settings, which is a great shame. They haven't even gone to the bother of implementing an "Auto" mode for deinterlacing in their front-end, so almost all DVDs converted with it will produce seriously suboptimal output unless the end-user manually enables it. HandBrake really is an utter shambles for non-techy users, and far too limiting for anyone who understands what needs to be done only to discover that some fairly important X264 options simply aren't available.

Have a crack at decrypting the DVDs as per your guide then feeding the resultant files into MediaCoder with my custom profile as linked to earlier and then compare the results. The difference really is enormous to those of us with fussy eyes, and the resultant files at just 10MB per minute of source material (so around 1GB for a typical 100 minute movie) are plenty good enough for even a fairly fussy viewer to watch on a full-size TV too.

Thanks for your comments slipstream, I personally don't use "HandBrake" myself.
Regarding the settings in "HandBrake" being too techy is why I included the link in the Handbrake "How To" which goes into much more detail about HandBrake. http://www.winxdvd.com/resource/handbra ... ttings.htm

Hi TC. The problem with the linked guide above is that it only covers the absolute basics in terms of settings (and some settings simply can't be got at in HandBrake anyway) so it turns out relatively lousy output compared to a correct (according to the x264 developers) configuration. I've put more details on this in the other thread we were chatting in but I don't know how to place a link to it here. Hope you find it and it's of some help.

Might be worth adding that the Extreme supports SD cards formatted in NTFS out of the box . Just loaded a 10GB movie onto my card and it worked fine . Kinda makes FAT32 even more redundant xD

Hi Guys, Just got back - that is great news cantisque about NTFS although I am puzzled because I contacted Humax complaining that the HDD and USB drives on their set top satellite systems won't support NTFS and they told me in no unceratin terms that they can't use NTFS because it is licensed by Microsoft (copyrighted) and they were not prepared to pay for the license. So either S.O. have decided to cough up or they are using it without being licensed.
Of course there is also the possibility that Humax were fobbing me off. I am very pleased that the Extreme can access NTFS as this puts a big + in the box over other android tablets.

Oh thats Great, Hope you have got a large SD card in your Extreme.
I had another thought about your reporting the Extreme supports NTFS out of the box - that perhaps Google have done a deal with Microsoft about NTFS so I am going to post a request under help to see if the Excel with ICS also supports NTFS>
