First Start Options Please

I posted this in another thread, but maybe it needs it's own, for other new users to learn from as well.

My tablet came today and I'll be charging it tonight and starting it for the first time in the morning.

I'm unsure if I should run the firmware upgrade/update when I start it, or if I can run it later if I so choose. I'd like to check the firmware before I update (if I update), but if so what will happen with the market, etc? Can someone fill me in? I want to do it right, right from the start!

Thanks in advance

Well, I just plugged it in for a nice 12hr charge and it started up. Did everyone's do that?

I shut it down immediately as I want that burn in, but I'm unsure if that even matters now, with it starting up when I started charging.

Hi Diego.
There is no firmware update as such, but have you done the market update as described in the Scroll's manual yet?

Hi Diego, this would make a good FAQ sticky thread on here when everyone has contributed :)

First things first, make sure you get a Wifi connection ASAP. I usually do the first main steps of the setup script, but skip the Google account stuff and press the Home icon when it appears in the notification bar.

Then I setup the Wifi account, turn off "tell me about open networks", turn off the sleep policy, turn off Data Roaming, tick "Only use 2G networks".

I then run App Installer and run the Home install. Then I press Home and select the 2nd option after ticking "Always use this one".

Now I can see a Market icon!

Then I connect to the market, and put in my Google account details.

Then I download 2 widgets, one to put Plane mode on and one to put Wifi on. I then put on Plane mode, and then put Wifi back on as Plane mode turns it off.

I then go to About Phone and check what Firmware I am running and put it in my Signature for this wonderful forum :D

I then download all the apps I can think off, as my Firmware v1.01 means that my market will die in about 8 hours :)

Once all the apps are installed, grab a backup app and back them all up to the SDCard in case you ever need to factory reset, as you can re-install them all in one go.

Any more tips people?

roguelj: It's charging my friend. I'll be done in the morning, 8am. The manual says 'Upgrade the latest firmware' and ends with 'This completes the firmware update, and also adds the Android Market icon to the Android desktop'. Has anyone NOT done this right away and checked their firmware details?

EDIT: Thanks Veng! Exactly the kind of advice I'm looking for.

The manual refers to it as firmware, but I don't think it is - its just an update to Home so that you can access the Market.

I have firmware v1.01 and as far as I am aware have full access to the market (How would I know otherwise?, I can buy apps if that means I have full access)

Also my tablet booted once I plugged in the power lead, and still does that every time I plug it in turned off)

How long since you turned it on for the first time?

My market lasted for about 10-20 hours, and then stopped downloading.

k cool, I wondered about that. Seems strange, as rechargeable batteries need to burn in (AFAIK) before use, yet this uses them before they can charge. maybe batteries are better these days than I remember them being.
