I believe the first link you mentioned is the one I was advised to try to avoid the instant search, diddnt work for long...

... or turn off your javascript. That kills it for good 
But you have to re-enable it for any google services (mail, blog etc). I use the NoScript add-on for Firefox, you can set javascript preferences per site.
