It is discretionary, youre correct, there are also sensors on the main board which can be checked as some people have even tried to "tippex" the sensors white again! Twits.....
Anyhow, this is the way I apply it.... if the sensors are slightly coloured and I can find no evidence of ESD/Water damage (green crap on the board anywhere) then I allow it under warranty. Some engineers will apply different rules dependant on the customers attitude, I never have, I treat all customers the same way (tries to lie convincingly!). All manufacturers now use moisture detect pads. Apple store staff are not generally technically trained to the same degree as engineers, in fact as far as I know, no store staff can fail to book a repair due to evident water damage, it has to be sent to people like me for assessment.
