Free File hosting - help required please

Postby Trashcooky » September 8th, 2012, 1:56 pm

I received an email from "Sugarsync" informing me that several files which I have linked to pages on the android novices pages with them for this forum have breached their T's&C's. These include Rom's and update zips and even a pdf with instructuions for LIvesuite. As this is not a filesize issue, I can only summise they have decided there is a copyright issue with these files and I can't see it being a bandwidth issue either ???

I know other memebers on this forum have experienced issues with "Sugarsync" and it may simply be a ploy to get free user to update to a paid plan.
Consequently I have been searching for a suitable alternative so I can mend the broken links in the forum's android novices section and I came accross this which seems too good to be true.

"filehosting.org http://www.filehosting.org/provides an easy possibility for you to send large files to your friends. Just upload the file you want to share with your friends and we send you a download link to your file. You can give this download link to your friends by mail or messenger. It is also allowed to link to the download page from websites and communities. This is easy, fast and reliable filehosting!

You don't need any kind of premium-accounts, our service is completely free for everyone. You can upload any type of file (movies, music, documents, images, zip files and more). Any file in any format can be uploaded and downloaded for free. We have no file size limit. There are no restrictions on the number of times a file can be downloaded.

Files can be downloaded from any computer from our high speed servers. You don't need any special software installed to be able to download your files. You decide who you want to share your files with. Keep your files private, or send your download links only to friends or family. Alternatively you can choose to share your download links on blogs, forums and social networking sites. So try now our free and simple filehosting service."

As this seems far too good to be true, I wondered if anyone on here has heard of or use this service. I won't start using it yet until I get some feedback from some of you. In the mean-time, be aware that some of my download links on the forum are broken.

Well, looks like I will be answering my own query.
I tried to sign up using a throw away email address and straight away it wanted mt to link the account to Facebook.
Not wanting to do that I managed to skirt around that part and tried an upload test file.
It balked at that because I had not allowed it enough access to my personal information.
When I went to close the browser there were several unwanted advertising pages underneath it.

So it seems like I was right to begin with, it is too good to be true.
Nevermind I'll keep looking - already got box and dropbox - looks like I'll be losing Sugarsync and Skydrive is OK but you can't link to individual files, you allow access to one in the public folder and you allow access to everything even though you thought you had created an individual file link. So beware, skydrive users, you let some-one see one file and you are giving them access to everything you have stored in your Skydrive public folder.

If I find any worthwhile alternative hosting sites I will come back here and post them.

Yes I would give "Sugarsync" a wide berth - They seem to be getting worse these days.

Seems I have found a free filesharing site that we haven't had mentioned on the forum before.
There are lots of instruction pages in their help files and it appears to work just like DropBox.
I can't find any filesize limits (yet) I uploaded a 241 Mb rom and it didn't flinch.
Syncs just like DropBox and has a very similar interface.

You can find it here: https://www.idrivesync.com

Yes, I already looked at Mediafire but their onetime download links only last for 15 days on a free account so anything I posted including a Mediafire download link I would need to re-upload/refresh every 15 days.
With the amount of linked posts I do I would end up with a collection of posts with broken links that I couldn't keep up with.

Of course, the proper solution is to have a paid account but as a pensioner I generally don't spend money where I can avoid it.

Do you have a Hotmail account?
If so, have you tried SkyDrive from Microsoft?

7 GB free to new users, there is a file size limit using browser of 300MB or 2GB using SkyDrive application.

Yes I have been a SkyDrive client for quite a while my 7Gb is almost all used up.
Currently I am using these.
SkyDrive - you don't need a Hotmail account just a Windows Live account.
SugarSync
DropBox
Box
IDrive

Of these I find DropBox wins hands down but I need more people to share my link http://db.tt/4LG5LNIK to increasde my storage:
