Access a USB flah drive

Postby Rodders » February 15th, 2012, 2:00 pm

I would love to be able to access the data on a flash drive plugged into the USB socket. Have tried with no success. File Manager and ES don't find it at all. None of my apps seem to see it either. Any ideas please?

What tablet have you got? I have an Excel and it reads camera cards (in a USB adaptor) and standard USB drives with no problems at all.

Yes i have an excel - any idea what I could be doing wrong? I have an adapter for the small USB port - it makes me wonder if this is working OK?

Hi - I'm sorry, I really have no idea. Simple stuff - is the mini plug pushed all the way in to the port? Does the camera card USB adaptor have an LED light on it - does this light up when you connect it? Sorry I can't be more help.

Some of the cheap adapters are known not to work. Are you using the cable supplied with the Excel?

Can't use that cable it's got a male end on it and won't fit. I suspect my adapter - I will have to try to get another one.

Hi Rodders,

I have experienced problems with usb on the Scroll and can only get devices to work using the OTG lead that came bundled with the Excel. I bought 2 mini usb adaptors and neither will work on my Scroll.

From your description I suspect your are describing the longer lead that connects the Scroll to your PC which does have a male connector on the end. Did you get an OTG lead with your Scroll as I am convinced these are differently wired.

I am sure someone out there knows why this is but clearly the pinouts must be different on a proprietry mini usb adaptor than those of the OTG lead that Scroll provide.

I have seen several leads on Amazon described as OTG but I have no experience if they will work on the Scroll.

Sorry I haven't got a solid answer to your problem but this does seem to be something that many of us have experienced. Perhaps one of the moderators have some clues?
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

Just to echo the above post - all of the USB drives/camera cards I have used have been through the short OTG lead that came with the Excel. This has a mini plug at one end that plugs into the tab and a female USB on the other which takes the USB drives etc. It is only about 4" long - did you not get one?

Thanks all you guys. Silly me - I've just looked in the box and in the bottom is the short lead - Plugged it in and everything works perfectly. You must be right about it being different from the standard one. Thanks for all your help. Problem solved!

Final post for me - Done a bit of homework and apparently OTG cable is different from normal USB in that pin 4 and 5 are shorted in the OTG cable. This enables the device to determine which way round it should be going ie whether ir is acting as a host or a slave. All is revealed.
