Charlie

I'm looking at your build.prop against the one in the Essential firmware update and wondering how hard it would be to make a new build.prop for the Essential (as I have).

Any tips? :)

Upload your original Essential build.prop for me and I will change it.

You're a star. I've attached the build.prop file extracted from the Scroll Essential firmware update currently available on the Storage Options website. I zipped it to allow it to be attached.

Looking forward to this :)

All the best and thanks in advance

@glenn1966,

It would have been better to have the one off your device as we know that one works, the one in the update, might be messed up already. Anyway, I have changed the one you have provided, as my time is limited.

You will still need to do part 3 (clear data and cache) and maybe part 2 of the 'How to'.

@All

IMPORTANT: ESSENTIAL TABLET ONLY

Make sure you have debugging option ticked, in the tablets main setting under 'Applications' > 'Development'>
As I don't have an Essential Tablet - I can not test this build.prop. There is a chance that my changes could cause a boot-loop. Use at your own risk! Make sure you have a backup and/or way to get back - i.e ADB, hence needed debugging on.

@glenn1966 - Sorry if you know this already, I just don't know how much you know or your skill level.

Charlie

The one from the update is the same one running on my tablet at the moment without problems, does that help? I updated the firmware as soon as I got the tablet last month, rooted it and so on.

I have a reasonable level of expertise (BSc in computer science, but that was 25 years ago!!) and have been playing around with the Kitchen from XDA-Dev, but without success so far, but that's another story.

Many thanks for this, I'll try it out later on and let you know how I get on.

All the best

Yes, that's fine then.

You probably know way more than me then :)

If you compare my edited one to the original build.prop - You will see what I have changed and added, for future reference and your own tweaking.

Charlie, you're a genius!

I don't know as much as I used to (I learnt Cobol at university!), but this has been a revelation. I didn't think the Scroll Essential was up to much, but with this mod the screen resolution is better, the resistive screen seems more responsive and the Market is working properly.

Respect is due, sir! Many thanks.

I'm feeling more confident now about trying to get the Bluetooth drivers and the 'Serial-over-USB' working on this tablet now that I have write access sorted for the system files.

If anyone else is intersted, the mod works for the Scroll Essential.

@glenn1966 - You are welcome, thanks for the kind words - I am very glad you like it :D

I did put in a few extra tweaks for you. Not sure why they had the screen density set at 200 - 160 is better for these tabs and also an important thing, that the market checks (along with other things) to see whether an app (in Googles view) is compatible or not.

Enjoy.

P.S - Good luck with your Bluetooth drivers and the 'Serial-over-USB' project.

EDIT:Update - @glenn1966, did the screen look big before you used the SO update?

Quick question about this process, would it be similar for the new "Extreme" model that uses ICS?

Just wondering because I was hoping to be able to get the Sky app on mine, everything else should be fine except for that.

I know this process won't work the same way and that I shouldn't attempt it, just wondering if you would think about a guide for it too.

Thanks :)

Hi,

You are correct to NOT follow this guide for the Extreme (as you would end up in a boot loop or worse). I could do a similar guide for the Extreme, it would be a different build.prop, permissions files and maybe more - I would know for certain what needs to be done, if I could get my hands on an Extreme tablet.
