So true. I probably should have said if you could help me with this in Ubuntu I'd probably find it easier. I accomplished more in 30 minutes yesterday than I did all last weekend with Windows. I'm running 11.04 and I got this far myself yesterday before seeing the Ubuntu thread.

Image

Went into recovery with a blank screen and rebooted on command.

I would now just like to double check the next steps in Ubuntu. First I'd create a folder called "modules" on the internal SD card of the Scroll and put the extracted files in it. Then I'd get to "20080411 device" again as above . Then
Step 1)

mkdir /data/recovery
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/nandf /data/recovery
ls /data/recovery/lib/modules

To check I have CWM5 installed.

Step 2)

cd /data/recovery/lib/modules
busybox cp /mnt/extern_sd/modules/*.ko .
cd /
umount /data/recovery
rmdir /data/recovery
exit

And I should have a CWM I can see.

To confirm, the "modules" folder goes on the internal SD card?

Do I still need to do adb shell before 1) or is it ./adb shell?

Are the commands entered as one section? So I can simply copy and paste them and then hit enter? It's not, for example, cd /data/recovery/lib/modules then enter busybox cp...then enter?

Ah, a convert! :D

Ok in all seriousness well done.

Create a directory called modules on your removable SD card (note the extern_sd in the busybox command)

The ./adb will execute the file in the directory you are in, so you would need to be in the platform-tools directory. To answer your question before 1) and after changing to the platform-tools directory use:
Code: Select all
./adb shell

TBH I would copy the lines one at a time and ensure that you don't get an error then after each press enter (sorry if its not clear)

Don't know if you spotted but our Excels have a bigger than normal battery and possibly a better camera! So its not all bad.

Success! Thanks so much for getting me to this point. No problems with commands and I can now see CWM. At the bottom of the recovery screen are the lines

CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log

Is this normal when you haven't done an inital back up?

Stupid question again probably but should I do an initial back up given my problem below?

I had problems getting the drivers to work on Windows and did a factory reset in Privacy on the scroll. After that it was recognised as a "MID" same as on Ubuntu. However, I lost some stuff at some point either during or after that like, the "google talk" bit. I can't download anything from the market whereas before it was fine. I also can't do another factory reset on the scroll, it just hangs on the "erase SD card" bit and does not reset. I know that "google talk" microphone icon was there before and that I'm not getting back to factory settings.

Do you think the wipe data/factory reset will work in CWM if a factory reset using the scroll itself will not?

Yeah, I've been using Ubuntu as my everyday OS for about 4 years now. I like it even more now and very much wish I'd never plugged the Scroll into Windows.

Hmm not sure, may be some sort of permissions issue, I wouldn't have thought it would be connected with copying the modules to the lib directory.

Do a backup ASAP. It will not hurt to backup, what ever you have, any backup is better than none.

Nothing will have changed on the "Normal" side of the tablet so what ever the "Privacy" factory reset is doing its unlikely that CWM would have any effect on it. You could try removing the SD card before resetting.

Wiping the cache in CWM might be a good idea its non-destructive and just forces apps to recreate any temporary data that they might use.

As for Google Talk being present I don't have it on my tab so I don't believe its a factory installed option. I do have an MP3 recorder with a microphone icon and the easy installer for the scroll apps. Did your Excel come with a Market widget on home screen 2?

Ideally we need a image we can flash to get us back to square one, but I don't believe there is such a thing. The image that will work on the earlier build is unsafe for these recent Excel's in the same way flashing CWM was to our tablets. In theory flashing the early build image then restoring the CWM backup will get us back to where we are now BUT you would be working with no screen to perform the restore!

I will post if I find anything else.

It was, that was the solution, thanks. After doing that I was able to do a factory data reset without problems. I do now have the Market widget on the second screen and the market itself now works fine again. You're right, there is no Google Talk and it's obviously not needed for the market.

I have now done a backup in CWM and rebooted into it again in order to wipe the cache. Those 4 E: lines are now gone and everything looks fine.

Can I now safely delete that "modules" folder from my external SD card?
