What actually happens when you use all the wipe options?

Postby Sprat » October 6th, 2012, 2:00 pm

The reason for asking this question is I have used (as far as I can see) all the wipe options (WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET, WIPE CACHE PARTITION, WIPE DALVIK CACHE) thinking that when I reboot without installing a new ROM, it would produce an error such as one you would find with a Windows system. Instead it successfully boots into the previous installed ROM but with everything reset.

Is this normal? I apologise if it's a bit of a dumb question and it's probably wrong to relate it to installing a new Windows OS where you get rid of the previous OS by formatting the drive but I just want to make sure that my Extreme is behaving as it should before I install a new ROM.

Also, does it matter if you use all/any wipe options in any order?

Thanks very much for any advice you can give me.

It can depend also on how you are going to install a new rom.
If you use Livesuite to flash a new rom with full format then you will wipe everything.

This is a bit out on a limb but I am curious.
Browse to your LOST.DIR - there may be 2 if you have an external sd card installed one on internal SD and one on External SD, if so check them both.

LOST.DIR folder will sometimes hold files (all with numbers as their name) which are occasionally created at bootime time via the FSC (file system check). These files are created automatically if something fails to meet the system check as expected. It is possible to restore some of these files if you have the tools and know-how.

If you do have a collection of files in either or both LOST.DIR you can safely delete the entire folder/s as it/they will be created again automatically during the FSC at boot - but will be empty.

Deleting LOST.DIR may cause the odd app to cease working but only if it was in trouble to begin with as when this happens the system will try to hold things together using the LOST.DIR file rather than the original and if you delete it then the app will have to be re-installed - but only if there was a problem with it or perhaps your system memory to begin with.

Regarding files being restored at boot after a wipe is not too much of a surprise as the FSC will interactively try to repair damaged file systems at reboot during the FSC.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

Thanks for your reply.
I seem to have just buggered up my storage after using LiveSuite although I didn't choose the full format option. Please see http://scrolltabletforum.co.uk/site/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=3093&start=10
I really need to get my head round these wipes and options, and stop leaping before looking!
Thanks again.

I don't have an Extreme so can't help with things much but I have been following the CM10 thread and noted the comments about flashing Suggsy89's rom to increase the system partition beyond 300Mb.
I have an Excel but did want to have a look at CM10 so entirely at my own risk I broke the rules - or the advice being given.

I am not suggesting that you do what I did but it may interest you as it worked for me.
I posted it here - don't know if any of it will help you or not.viewtopic.php?f=48&t=3110#p24651
If you no longer have CWM installed then you may be in trouble anyway unless you can follow the threads about installing this on the Extreme as you will need it to install some compatability files needed to get CM10 working properly on the Extreme. (for me it was the MOMO9 but this is only suotable for the Excel - you need the one for the Extreme)

Thanks for your help. I've had a look at the link. I have tried updating/reinstalling as you have but to no avail unfortunately. I still have CWM and can use it to apply zips successfully from an external card but the missing internal storage still remains the same when rebooting.

I'm continuing this problem in Suggsy's thread that gives the link to the img file that changes the partition size.

Having said that it would be really useful and informative if someone could explain or post links that explains what each wipe/setting is for and when you would use them in CWM. Apologies if there is already a thread that does this. After/If I sort out this mess that I have gotten myself into, I'll have a look at CWM's website. Surely that will explain them.

Thanks again!

Normally you would wipe after installation of the new rom (but possibly before other updates) as then when you reboot the FSC is checking the new rom. When you wiped before and then rebooted the FSC was checking your old rom. Hope that makes some sort of sense.
