Postby delly1984 » March 25th, 2013, 1:14 pm

Hello all,

I'm hoping someone can help me. I bought my scroll II extreme yesterday and all seems to be working fine except whenever I try and download from the play store I get an error message. ' error retrieving information from server (rpc:s-5aec-0) . ive tried it through a couple of different wifi spots and still the same. any ideas?

Thanks a lot,
Delly

Hello delly1984, and welcome to the forum.
I have deleted your duplicate post which was in "Hardware guides and tutorials" - not the place for help requests?
Please do not make duplicate requests for the same thing as they will be deleted.
Hope you get some help with your problem, sounds very odd.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

Hi,

I don't know a definitive answer to your question - your error does sound odd. The error code is essentially meaningless to anyone outside Google I would think. You need to ask Google, but I don't know where you go to be able to ask a question, and more importantly get a meaningful answer back.

You could ask Storage Options customer service if they can help, but looking on this forum they do not have a great reputation for getting back with useful answers. No harm in trying though, and let us know what success you have.

In general I think Google Play is not an official installation on Scroll tablets. Only approved tablets are supposed to have Play Store installed and I think it is unofficially installed on Scrolls. My tablet is a Scroll Engage. Play was installed on it when I opened the box, it has always worked for me and it gets updated automatically when Google updates the app. That means I have not actually had to solve a problem like yours.

If it is not working, then maybe you would be better off saying it doesn't work and uninstalling it. Then you can see about installing it afresh. I have never had to do this fortunately. You cannot download Play as an app from Google. It is not that simple. However there are places you can get hold of the app as an ".apk", that is a raw application file that you can "sideload". Step one is to find a source, and maybe you can find that by searching this forum, or elsewhere with a search engine. I think the forum help files will also tell you about sideloading. If not search elsewhere for Android sideload. Essentially this means putting the .apk onto a SD card or USB stick and passing it to your tablet. There is a security setting in your tablet settings - go into Settings, tap Security, and there is an option labelled Unknown Sources that you need to check to "Allow installation of non-market apps". That may enable you to get a working Play Store.

If you don't want to do that there are other app stores, including Amazon, and SlideMe and some others. If you decided to go for any of the others, check its reputation in an internet search. There are some dodgy app stores, mainly located in foreign parts, like China. (That is an advantage of Android over Apple. You are allowed to go to third party app stores. Google don't try to prevent it.)

There is one other thing you can try. Google Play apps can be installed remotely. Several times I have finished up at Google Play on the browser in my PC. You can click on install there, and for me at least, that is sufficient to initiate the download automatically when you turn on you tablet (with internet access of course). After a few moments the app starts downloading on my tablet with zero interaction from me. Of course you need to be signed in to Google Play on the PC with the same Google account as you have set up in Play Store on your tablet. I am assuming that you have signed in to Play Store with a working Google account (the email and password for my Gmail account did the trick for me). If you have not signed in to Play on your tablet then this remote download won't be able to work. Give it a whirl by trying a remote download of a small free app.

Anyway there are some thoughts. Drop a reply here so we know how you got on.

I'll bet it is to do with GMAIL v GOOGLEMAIL ... assuming you have a GMAIL or GOOGLEMAIL account, if not, that's your answer...

Anyway, here's a link to a post I made ages ago, re Play Store connectivity issues...

Hope it helps...
