Ebuyer found the unit faulty after extensive tests so sent me a replacement. Yay!
I'm not ready to try 'upgrading' again just yet but know exactly where to come for help.
Incidentally I checked and the new extreme and it already has the 'usb debugging' ticked in the developer options.
