Charlie wrote:@cantisque - Glad to hear you got it. At first glance of your photo I thought you had taken it apart already, as I saw the circuit board on the right first. lol

Also looks like you have the same monitor as me, is that a Dell one?

Haha! No no, I could never be so cruel to a new toy! :P

And yes, good eye! A Dell E228WFP to be exact, getting on in years but still just as good as the day I got it. I'm not even going to guess how you managed to tell what it was just from the corner o_o.

It seems pretty cool, even though I've barely gone beyond the homescreen yet :).

Unfortunately I will have to be sending it back because I've counted 11 blemishes on the display, 3 of which are large chunks of grit under the glass, the rest being dead pixels.

Image

A few dead pixels I can tolerate, but the state of this screen is going to drive me nuts. Shame, because it's quite a lovely screen otherwise :(. Anyone else have this issue?

After having my rant on the futileness of the alternate markets (to Google Play - i.e. they don't have anything 'mainstream' on them), things got better....

After having got home I hooked up the Extreme to the WiFi, no problem at all. Had a play around the system, ran FaceBook (I know...) and the top 'post' was info that a newer app was available. Clicked the link and it took me right into Google Play. Having read (somewhere - they all blur after a while) that if you don't already have an Android device it won't let you 'Play', I used my sons login (who has an HTC phone).

It allowed me to update FB, plus download most apps I wanted. The main ones it wouldn't were things like the various players (BBC, ITC, etc), but I sorted out runing those in the Browser later in the evening (tip I picked up for iPlayer: in Browser tap squares in top right, tap Request Desktop Version).

So all in all, not as bad (from the getting hold of apps aspect) that I had feared!

Mine's getting taken away by the men in fluorescent coats tomorrow.

Tonight I'll continue fiddling with apps and see what cool stuff I can make it do when the replacement arrives. So far I've tried Tiki Racing, Sonic CD, Youtube, Angry Birds Space and Astro File Manager. Took the web browser for a spin too. All of which worked flawlessly, I might add!
I especially love being able to download apps so effortlessly. My Blackberry is a nightmare in this area, when it's downloading something, you cannot do anything else.

My two main niggles are that I can't get games to go full screen (the bar along the bottom still shows) and there is considerable delay in tapping a letter on the keyboard and it actually registering. These may just be Android-specific problems though, rather than a problem with the device.

Guys,

Got two Extremes today as gifts for family members after a year of running and modifying Archos 101T's.

Is there a link to get an .apk or a methodology for getting Google Play - I can see it must be possible by posts above but getting nowhere fast and running out of time as one needs to go to Kent tomorrow am.

Any help appreciated gratefully

Richard

EDIT:- Solved it just copied the apk to sd and ran it locally
