Looking to buy one of these. How easy will it be to root? and if possible, any tips?

Never had an android product before so new to the rooting process.

Thanks

Anybody know what chipset the extreme is based on? Need that info to ask at xda developers forum about rooting advice. Can't use all of Avast! antivirus and firewall without root access.

It looks exactly like the Gemei G9 which uses an Allwinner A10 chip so probably that. Very common chip in Chinese tablets.

The Extreme comes rooted, at least mine did. To test, run something like Android Terminal Emulator, and type 'su' at the prompt, you'll get a root shell.

I understand the need/want to root a device for many reasons. Why do you feel that there is a need/want to have anti-virus software on an Android tablet?

Going off topic here...
I know what you mean, an anti-virus on an android device...? strange... why do we want an anti-virus? linux is safe right? but I did read somewhere that Google removed 5 malicious apps recently from there play store, so maybe it does seem wise to do so, i use an app called "Droid Wall" which you can set what app uses the internet and what doesnt, quite a nifty little tool.

For root, maybe these commands may help you guys out...
Code: Select all
adb shell mount -o rw,remount -t ext4 /dev/block/nandd /system
adb push su /system/xbin/su
adb shell chmod 06755 /system
adb shell chmod 06755 /system/xbin/su

Dont quote me on the partitions though...

As for rooting I was under impression that the Extreme was already rooted just install the superuser app and off you go, like on the Excel. Which is nice, but does take some of the fun out rooting a device for yourself.

Sorry - Off topic again: That maybe - but normally these malicious apps (not all) call/text premium rate numbers no need to worry with any of the Scroll tablets (yet) as they don't have the phone hardware. Also most if not all the anti-virus apps for Android would not spot a rouge app anyway. Also many AV apps (the free ones mainly) just harvest your data to sell on to marketing companies (hence why they are free - Remember there is not such thing as a free lunch). Hopefully Avast does not, I have used them (& Nod32) for many years on my pcs without any issues.

Just as an FYI, after reading this thread I checked my Extreme and it is already rooted. I didn't do it so it came out of the box like that.
