Sleep not Suspend with screen off?

Anyone know a way to get the Extreme to not suspend itself when the screen is off?
I'd like to be able to leave long running things like downloads without wasting power with having the screen on but turning the screen off seems to suspend all running apps, and kill wifi.

I have Settings > Wifi > Advanced > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep checked, and also tried Settings > Developer Options > Stay awake. The latter does keep it awake, but also keeps the screen on.

Any ideas?

If I press the power button (without holding it in), it turns off the display and locks the unit. I left it that way overnight and had a message on Yahoo Messenger when I unlocked it next morning that had been sent while I was asleep.
Unless the messenger app supports offline messages (I don't think it does?), I just assumed that the device was still working while being on standby.

I can't talk about the Extreme because I don't have one - but like cantisque, when I give a short press on the power button the screen goes off but the unit remains active. I have received FaceBook alerts and also used the Tunein radio app in this state. These only stop if I do a complete power-down also in this state I get application update alerts.

Thanks for the replies. It definitely wasn't staying awake for me (I am just doing a short press of the power key).. a few seconds after power off, it's no longer pingable.

However, just to answer my own question, I've found Wake Lock which accomplishes what I want. It allows you to acquire a PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK (CPU on, but screen off).
