Customising Extreme (flash, roms etc)

Hi all,

A happy recent purchase of the Scroll Extreme (on Friday just gone), loving it so far. I've played around a bit with it, with things like Apex Launcher, Simple Text, Desktop Visualiser etc. (Basically stuff I've done on my One X). I have no experience with Roms, Kernels, Flashing and the like and I've tried to find some information on doing it on the extreme (as it's pretty cheap I am confident of giving these such things a go!).

Is there any threads, views or help that anyone can give?

Thanks in advance!

Whis.

Hi Whis. I'm new to the Extreme too but I've been messing with roms for a while although I'm no dev - more a pro user?

Anyway, this is the first thing you should do I think viewtopic.php?f=58&t=2448

get a copy of livesuite on your pc and then get a livesuite .img of your stock rom that way if you totally mess up you can unbrick your extreme by flashing the firmware

Ok thanks guys. I will have a proper look this evening. At first glance it looks rather confusing!

It makes my head fuzzy when I read through the One X forums on Xda, it's like I am reading Russian most of the time :D

(p.s, I can't read nor speak Russian!)

Well I've had a look at both and to put it bluntly it doesn't make any sense to me. I don't understand what to do in Livesuite, and I also have no clue as to why the post supplied by Zorba is relivent.

Sorry guys :(

The post by Zorba gives you instructions on how you dump the ROM that comes with the tablet. It's good to have that as a backup in case your custom ROM goes tits up.

I see! And where do I type all that? Is it in one of them terminal things? I.E Andriod Terminal Emulator. I've downloaded that whilst reading another post about finding out if your tablet is rooted.

I've found adb, I guess it's that I need :)

To dump the firmware you need to set up an ADB on your PC.

Install the Android SDK. Install platform-tools and extras in the SDK. Update it the SDK.

Use a program called PdaNet to install the usb drivers for the Extreme.

You need to connect the Extreme to your PC via the usb cable.

Locate the install directory of the SDK, find "ADB" in platform-tools.

Do "right shift key and right click of mouse" then "open command prompt here"

Type....

Code: Select all
adb devices

That should list your device if everything is setup okay.

To dump the firmware..

Type...

Code: Select all
adb shell cat proc/partitions

Make a note of the partitions... Example "nanda, nandb, nandc, nandd, nande, nandf, nandg, nandh"

Then...

Code: Select all
dd if=dev/block/nanda of=sdcard/nanda.img

That will copy the partition "nanda" to the internal storage"

As an example "nanda" is the bootloader, and is initiated when you first boot up the device.

Do the same for each nand block.

You will then need to copy the nand blocks to a safe place.

Enjoy ;)

Thanks suggsy! Just what I needed. Managed fine until the 'dd if=dev...' part. It says 'dd is not recognised as an internal or external command.

What am I doing wrong?
