How to get CWM on your Extreme (Formally-I'm giving up)

Been trying to read threads on here on how you backup your stock rom, and install new versions (ie suggsy's 4.0.4 builds) without completly f®¢$^¥ing up my Extreme, and I'm completly lost. So much so, think I will have to give up and make do with the shipped 4.0.3 build, as at least that way I have a working tablet.

As I said, been trying to follow the threads, but they go off on so many tangents, that unless you have the knowledge to start with, which I don't, then they become unfollowable.

I thought backing up would be easy.... well I can't find out where to start.

CLOCKMOD ROM manager. Should I install on the tab, pc or both. The code listed by the posters, is this entered into the pc with the tab connected via usb or into the terminal emulator on the tab. Is the free version of ROM manager ok, or do i need the purchased one. Why can't I backup without ROM manager wantng to install another prog (recovery). Didn't I see a post somewhere advising against installing Clockmod.

Then some use Livesuite, is this as well or instead. Adp is not working for some, what is adp, do I need this on my pc.....

This is getting too complicated for an old fart like me.... Appreciate that some knowkedge may be needed, but it seems there is not a 1 easy to follow post to get me backing up and flashing the new version.

I'll just have to wait on the sidelines here and make do with what I have. Seems my old technical skills of writing Cobol on punch cards is not tranferble after all.

Sorry to hear your having trouble, first off, dont use Rom Manager with these tablets, its not supported and is useless.

I really dont know if this will help.

We use "Clockworkmod Recovery" to backup our stock firmware, flash updates or patches etc.
It is a recovery program that is far more advanced than the stock one that comes with your tablet.

Usualy to overwrite the stock recovery with clockworkmod recovery we need to use our pc connected to the tablet via our usb lead, this also requires "ADB" - android debugging bridge.

This is a piece of software that we can use to "Talk" to our tablets.

Because Rom Manager is not supported we need the actual recovery "image" (example) "recovery.img"

This needs to be "pushed" to our device via ADB usualy using manual commands via our pc or using a pre-written script on our pc.

Livesuit is another form of flashing a rom or a new firmware to our tablets. (example)
You can use livesuit if you soft bricked your tablet when flashing a new rom with Clockworkmod Recovery and cannot get the device to boot up.

So here we can also flash a complete image to our device.

I use both, as i need to. The most popular is Clockworkmod though.

So, to make any sort of change to the OS (Android) we first need a recovery option just incase we make a balls up and cannot boot the tablet fully or "adb shell" to the tablet, so this is where i advise Clockworkmod Recovery.

ADB MUST BE INSTALLED - It is a Computer Program, for our COMPUTER

This is part of a package called the Android SDK

THE DRIVERS FOR OUR TABLET MUST BE INSTALLED - They must be installed on our COMPUTER

These drivers "link" our tablet to ADB via USB

CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY MUST BE INSTALLED - It is a Recovery Program for our TABLET

First thing to do is set up the Google SDK, have you done that?

Next have you installed the drivers for the tablet, have you done that?

You can do it the SDK way and that is the correct way, but I couldn't get it to work. This is the way I did it:

Installing CWM on the Scroll Extreme
1) Uninstall USB drivers you are using
2) Install USB drivers from this zip: http://upld.eu/droid/livesuit.zip
3) Connect your Extreme and enable debugging (should be enabled by default)
4) Download https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=047eeec6 ... BF08%21562
5) Run CWM Recovery Script Scroll Extreme_TEST.bat from the RAR
6) Select option 1 and wait, it may take up to 2 hours to work - it did on my Extreme
7) Once it's completed it will tell you - you can now select option 2 (reboot)
8) CWM should now be installed
9) Verify by holding the left volume key + power button for around 10 seconds, it will then boot up into CWM

Note: You can backup your existing ROM, however I think suggsy has a backup somewhere - I didn't bother.

Flashing using CWM on the Scroll Extreme
1) Connect the USB cable to your Extreme
2) Select 'File Storage Mode' on your tablet
3) Copy one of the .zip files to your devices internal memory card (or external)
4) Turn off your Extreme
5) HOLD DOWN the left volume key + power button for around 10 seconds, it will then boot up into CWM
6) (Volume keys = up/down, back = back and power = select) Select 'Factory reset/format'
7) Once that is completed you can choose the option to select a ROM and follow the on screen instructions.

Sorry to hear you are having doubts Kevin as you seemed to be really enjoying your tablet up till now.
Suggsy is a real brick with support and problem solving but I do understand where you are coming from about following all the threads as they grow so quickly but are really worth reading through.

I warn you though that I felt quite motion sick by the time I had watched it all as the narrator waves the tablet all over the place. Have a look and see if this is of any help.

no not installed anything on my pc as yet, been trying to follow the instructions.

will install the Sdk and drivers, and start to work my way thiugh again...

Trashcooky, thanks for this. Wathced the vid, and not saying it has made it easy, but seeing it all has made each if the steps clearer in why they are needed.

Right, no clear that CLOCKMOD RECOVERY is the first step to get backup of the stock build.

I think what is being said on the other threads, is that I can then copy the images from suggsy's posts, and usimg CLOCKMOD RECOVERY, use them as a 'restore' so that I install the new build by restoring suggsy's 4.0.4 ver x 'backups'.

I think it is getting clearer
