GL to SD working well on latest cm9

Postby madmatt30 » June 10th, 2012, 7:32 pm

While editing the vold.fstab file works well enough for completely swapping sd & extsd mounts,it an absolute pain if updating to a new rom - everything defaults to normal & the procedure has to be done again - its I would say a pretty extreme measure to get full use of your extsd card storage - although the benefits are that you can install literally anything to extsd rather than the internal 8gb memory - it comes with some risk as you are infact editing a very important system file

Ive been having a play around with Gl to SD (free app from the play store) & can confirm it works 100% on the latest cm9 rom & kernel
This program (many old galaxy s2 owners & many other android phone owners that have owned phones with internal flash memory will already know of it) allows you to copy any app/game data that is stored on the internal 8gb flash to external sd & mount inside the gl to sd app itself ,it doesnt change any of the system files & is 100% safe
This will work with any app (mainly games) that store large amounts of data inside the android/data folder on the internal 8gb flash & also any gameloft game that uses the gameloft/games directory
I had a few gameloft games that were taking up huge amounts of space on the internal 8gb
namely these few - NOVA 3 (1.77gb) , Lets Golf 3 (777mb) ,mass effect 3 infiltrator (583mb) , Asphalt 6 (911mb), Blood & glory (625mb)
This left me with literally a few hundred mb to spare !!
I have now moved all this data to my ext 32gb microsd card (nearly 5 gb of data ) & the games are working fine
Did this first with a class 4 8gb card to test - it worked ok but some of the load times were very very slow
Now using a class 10 32gb sandisk & it is very nearly on a par with the speed of the internal flash memory & I have literally all of my 8gb (well more like 5gb which is available) back ;-)

There is also an app called directory bind (I have only had partial success with this one) it worked for a while then tended to corrupt directory structures (it mounts automatically on boot) which lead to a lot of games asking to redownload all the gamedata numerous times when run - hence the recommendation of gl to sd

A lot of people have been asking about using the extsd for app installation - this is about as good as it gets without modifying the boot image or editing the vold.fstab file
Im finding at the moment that the 8gb memory is pretty much good enough for small apps, its only the big games with data downloads that take up huge amounts of space,& along with a 16 or 32gb card I reckon I can now live with it

If only I could get Gameloft games to work :( I can buy them but when i start them up it says the device isnt compatible and to get a refund. Oddly enough Mass Effect works. I have tried Asphalt and NOVA3 but no luck.

Also, this suggestion rocks, lovely find and thank you very much for taking the time to write it :)

ps: if you could tell me how you managed to get those games working... :P

download allwinner mod from the play store
run it )it sometimes stalls on first boot - if it does force stop & run again) ,set tablet to samsung galaxy sII (leave dpi alone)
reboot
uninstall the ones that dont work, redownload them from play store & they should work fine
NOVA 3 is very very laggy - Ive used chainfire 3d to get better framefates but its still pretty poor tbh
you can use allwinner to resaet the tablet back to allwinner a10 (default) once gamedata has been installed & game has been run once - or you can just leave as galaxy s2 - to be honest doesnt seem to make much difference

I pay for the majority of my games legit (I also have a sony experia play & a sensation xe) but I use snappzmarket to try any gameloft games first (free as they are cracked )- I refuse to pay for gameloft games that may not work until I know they do for sure as its nearly impossible to get a refund from them - once they work acceptably Ill them purchase them legit but not before - Gl make some op android games but their purchase/refund practice is beyond poor !

While we're talking about games, if anyone can get EA stuff to work like Dead Space, please post your method here. Mass Effect seems to work fine which is odd.

Also anyone managed to get Riptide to work without the stuttering sound? The graphics are good, but the sound is annoying.

Sorry to hijack your thread :(

dead space & riptide work using same method ;-)
always use sgsi9100 (galaxy s2) spoofing - - it has exactly the same mali400 gpu as the scroll - the i9000 (galaxy s) had a powervr gpu so shouldnt be used without chainfire 3d aswell

Awesome, will try Dead Space again. Men In Black 3 didn't work before and now it's downloading the game files which is awesome. The problem I got with Dead Space was the EA 5002 countrygate error :(

yep would seem the same prob with all ea games for some reason,I have all the data files on my sensation xe & se play but they use an adreno gpu & I very much doubt they would work :-/ - I will try them when I have time though just in case

Just one little thing,I know I said to use galaxy s2 in allwinner - theres an exception though with MIB3 - galaxy s2 spoof gives some corrupted graphics in game (only minor) ,if you spoof as galaxy s instead, graphics are fine,& the download is only 68mb instead of 100+

Ah, it's already downloaded the 100ish megs I think and looks OK so far :)

Did you manage to get Dead Space work at all on the tablet with just the Allwinner mod?
