Scroll Extreme

Hi. After 2 days of reading the forum regarding the Scoll Extreme and how to do CWM, I have square eyes but a flashed tablet. Thanks to all the contributors to the forum and it was so entertaining reading how to do all of this stuff. I was a little nervous/confused at first and sometimes wondered why certain things worked or not.... until I got the drivers and the pc "talked" to the tablet.
Any way I have learned how to back up the stock firmware, and have flashed the beast at least 4 times. Wow. so much different now and would like to thank all for their input to the forum.

I am 60 years old, gulp, but after a lot of reading, I'm sure anybody could do what I have been able to do.

A couple of questions.
1 I currently have this on the tablet, Scroll_Extreme_4.0.4_RC. Is this the latest upgrade.? Is this Jelly bean ?
2 i tried this one, cm10_a10_20120913, but after rebooting it would not let me swipe across to open the tablet at all. Any ideas, or is this not compatible with the extreme??
3 Where do I look on tablet to see what rom I have installed?

Thanks once again and now going to have a play with my reborn toy.

Steve

Hi Steve, Sounds like you had some fun and well done you in conquering all the fears that I know I felt first time I flashed my Excel. You are never too old to learn, I am 65 and still learning new stuff every day.
ICS R.C. sounds to me to be very much like Suggsy89's customised ROM image (he is a developer on this site).
R.C. stands for release candidate. The CM10 you tried is Jellybean and what you have currently is Ice Cream sandwich. You can find out a bit more by going to settings/about tablet where you will see either ICS 4.0.3 or ICS 4.0.4 I believe it will be the latter.

Putting JellyBean on the Extreme has proven to be a bit of a challenge as Suggsy89 had to recook the ROM image with an increased partition size. (Don't worry too much if you don't completely understand the implications of this) I would give Suggsy89's ICS a try out for a while and see if you are happy then try Jellybean if you want to see how good it is.

Everything you need to know is in the forum threads but as you found out it does take a bit of reading.
Good luck and happy flashing - (ooer that doesn't quite sound right does it - )

Thanks for the reply and woke up this morning after recharging the Extreme and a;ll working great. One other question.

I notice lots of stock apps from original build are not there in this build. Is there a file I can download that puts some of these back on, eg. facebook, google maps etc, or do I have to go to the play store and download them all again one by one.

Thanks to all the developers once again.

Unless you took backups with something like Titanium backup before you flashed then you will have to trawl the Google playstore to get what you want from there.

I may be wrong but some stock apps (e.g. Email client, Browser) aren't on the Play Store. I believe that for these you need GAPPS (Google Apps) wich is available on some dev sites.

Someone with experience of such things might be able to expand on this - I haven't done it, just read about it .

Bobc is quite right about you needing Google apps (Gapps) although the fact that you say everything is working fine and that you have flashed ICS R.C. (ICS release candidate) does rather indicate as far as I am aware, that the Suggsy89's R.C. ICS already has everything ( all the non downloadable Google apps) built into the ROM image.

You will though need to flash Gapps (Google apps) if/when you change from your current operating system of ICS to Jellybean as part of the Jellybean upgrade process.

This is well documented now on the Extreme threads.

A very crude test to "indicate" that you "probably" have Gapps installed or not is to confirm that you can interrogate Google Playstore and download apps.
If you can, then it is "almost" certain that Google apps are installed.

Gmail, Google Maps, and Voice search are all independently single downloadable apps from the play store, however the playstore app itself and some other system dependent apps are not, which is why it sometimes becomes necessary to install them , usually by performing a CWM (Clockwork Mod) update.

The Gapps required to be installed will vary according to what tablet you are updating and how large your system partitions are, this is why there seems to be so many differing file sizes of Gapps update.zips around. I believe that currently the largest Gapps file is from Christian Troy (of XDA developers fame) which includes facial recognition unlocking which is something that many folk owning tablets with low memory can do without, and so different versions of gapps are -prepared by the developers according to need.

This makes it important to ensure that you install the right Gapps file for your particular device to keep things as optimised as possible. The very same thing goes for compatibility files, which if incorrect can cock things right up.

If you do/did not have Gapps installed then you certainly would not be able to download apps from the playstore.

Congratulations Steve! You couldn't summarize what you did could you. I'm also wanting to flash my Extreme for the first time but going round in circles on all the various threads! I have the Scroll_Extreme_4.0.4_RC image, just struggling to get Windows to recognize my tablet, also not sure if that image file can be loaded onto the table using Livesuite or I need to get to grips with CWM.
As it's fresh in your mind I'd really appreciate a quick bullet-point list of what you did!

Hi Trashcooky and Spoonman. I would love to help but not sure of all the pages I looked on the forum to get the Extreme tablet working with CWM. I think I used the drivers from bottom of this page viewtopic.php?f=57&t=2545&start=10#p22775 and made sure I had Usb debugging turned on in the tablet . I also installled Android SDK manager and did all of the updates. I also installed ADB and basically followed all of the instructions from the 4th post on this page viewtopic.php?f=57&t=2581.
Sorry If I am breaking any rules by putting all of these links up. Only trying to help. If you still get stuck after Trashcooky's link and my "basic" knowledge, then maybe come back and might be able to give any more help.

By the way can someone help me. At the first instance, It advised I backed everything up I.E the nanda nandb nandc etc files. When I got to nandi, it keeps failing and saying the file is too big to write to ext card? The card has plenty of space but will not save (tried a dozen times) It says the file is 6074368 in size? Is this too big to save?

I just noticed that requests for help should not be posted here as there is a section for that. Sorry I missed that and will try and read the red notices before I post again...
