Storage Options ticket system/honouring warranty

Postby SilasCrumb » May 13th, 2013, 7:12 pm

Hi,

I got a Scroll Extreme II last Wednesday, and by yesterday there were a few faults that were apparent. The screen seems to be failing, with visible distortions in one of the corner of the screen whenever normal touch pressure is applied. The screen also seems to have a lot of interference when heavy disk access is taking place. There is also a lot of electrical interference audible whenever sound is played.

I have a hunch that the battery may be swelling up inside the case causing the screen to get squashed up against the glass, causing the visible distortion, and perhaps causes the other issues as well.

I raised a ticket with Storage Options early this morning (just mentioning the obvious screen distortion problem), but have not heard anything back from them yet. Can anybody tell me what their experience has been with this company in terms of turnaround of dealing with issues and sending out replacements? I am trying to avoid going back to the original retailer as they are down the other end of the country and they are likely to be awkward. If Storage Options take too long it will almost defeat the purpose of getting the tablet, and I needed to use it for a few specific events that are coming up.

Thanks for any guidance provided.

Hello SilasCrumb,
most people on this forum do not have many glowing words about Storage options but this is due to their lack of after sales service rather than device replacement. Many folk unfortunately do complain about the time taken by SO to reply to enquiries however, technically your first port of call should be with the supplier of the goods as it is with them that you have formed a contract not Storage Options who may ask you to contact the seller before they get involved.

Either way, I wish you luck - sounds like you may be right about the battery although if it is swelling then be careful as if something is wrong the type of battery used has been known to explode on rare occasions.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

Thank you for your reply.

I got a reply from Storage Options later that day, and after a bit of backwards and forwarding, they agreed to replace it for me.I sent the tablet out on Monday I just got a new tablet sent back through today.

I just been charging the tablet up and have just got it started. The funny thing is, there is no OS branding or pre-installed or pre-loaded apps on this unit and it appears to be running Android 4.1.1 rather than 4.0.4.

Is that normal? Should I be grabbing an image of that?

Unfortunately, another thing I should have perhaps mentioned is that "Storage Options" also have a record of releasing many versions of a named model tablet so even though you may think you have an Extreme II you may in fact have one variation of the Extreme II or to put it another way you may have an Extreme II (a) as example.

There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason why "SO" do this but as an example the original Scroll Excel was advertised with a declared battery capacity of 3,400 mAh whereas my own model actually has a battery rated at 3,600 mAh and for a short while "SO" changed their web description of the Excel stating a battery capacity of 4,200 mAh. The orginal Scroll Essential had a resistive screen whereas it was also marketed with a capacitive screen like the current essential II.

So long as you feel you are on the winning side of things then good luck to you although if there are no pre-installed apps this may cause you an inconvenience - for instance although Flash is no longer officially supported by adobe on android as it is seen now as outdated technology you may still want to use some apps that still require it, but it is no longer widely available to download. Also, do you have access to Google Play store ? None of the Scroll range are licensed by Google so officially there is no access to Play store."SO" used to pre-load their tablets with alternative app download sites but there were back-doors to allow you to access to what used to be Google Market - now Play store.

As far as making an firmware image then yes, if you are able then by all means do so as we don't have any download support for Extreme II stock firmware. I am sure I speak for many who would be grateful if you could host the file on drop-box or the like; or if you would rather I could host a copy in the Hackers playground if you let me have a copy.

If there are any apps or files you might need let me know and I will see what has been saved such as Flash 11. for instance I can host that if needed. Meanwhile, I hope you are happy with your new tablet and the delights of JellyBean.
Perhaps you might consider doing a write up on how you fare with this newer model. :)

Thanks for the additional information Trashcooky. I took the opportunity on the ride home to read the manual, and was slightly alarmed when i saw it explicitly say that Google Play was not supported, even though it was on an working my first Ice Cream Sandwich Extreme II. I thought I might be out of luck with this one, but Google play does appear on the desktop, although I have tried no apps yet.

An installer for flash would be very useful if i can not get it on Google play, as I am a browser person and not overly interested in having a variety of apps to do things I could keep to the app.

I am wondering if there might be any difference in the hardware... I will try and work out what is what and let you know.

Glad you found Google Play was on there otherwise there are ways to sideload it. This is the last version of Flash player that I have - although I do believe there may have been 1 later release before adobe withdrew support. You have not been able to download flash from Google Play for some time now as it has been withdrawn.
This Flash Player is for android and is version 11.1.115.17 and you can simply navigate to your download folder when you have it and simply click to install. You may wish to move it from your download folder to an external SD card for safe keeping for the future as it is not too easy to find any more.
Flash Player get it here

Thanks Trashcooky. I think Flash might already be installed on it, but at least i can fall back to this if need be.
I tried using ADB to backup the tablet. Is this good enough to be used as an image? If not, please let me know the best way to produce an unchanged image as I do not want to use the tablet until I have done this!

I'm afraid I can't help you on this one otherwise I would be happy to do so but either you have the know-how or you don't and I am just a humble forum moderator who doesn't have the know how to create an image from my tablet.

Perhaps someone else who reads this can come to our aid.
Meanwhile, glad you seem to have all you need on your tablet.

So I picked up my replacement tablet tonight and started going through setting up all of the apps I had installed on my returned tablet. Before I started I check that the tablet appears to be working correctly. This one arrived with the QC sticker broken, as if it had been opened previously or repaired. I was fairly confident that there are no signs of the old problem.

Just a few hours later and this replacement is now showing EXACTLY the same fault as the old unit in EXACTLY the same location on the screen (right behind where the speaker is). I am now wondering if this is a common fault due to internal components not being correctly secured, or if there is a batch of affected batteries or something like that.

I am seriously regretting that I bought this thing. If I had not bought it from a shop that is apparently notorious for reacting violently when you try and get a refund I would have got my money back the first time around. I needed to use this weekend to get it set up for a job I had in mind for it, and now I am back to square one. It is not like I can even put up with the defect as the fault looks exactly like a migraine aura for me, and it induces nausea every time I see it.

Am I the only one having this problem with the Scroll Extreme II?
