Extreme ll. Get hard factory reset

HI all
I have had my extreme ll for a few months and have read most of your posts and found them very interesting but have not yet been brave enough to try anything, but now I have a problem and would like some help/advice.
When I try to install apps I get an insufficient memory message although there seems to be lots of available memory so I decided to try a Settings/Backup and reset but get the unfortunately, settings has stopped message. Settings/Developer options gets the same message but everything else in Settings works OK. The tablet boots up normally and all the installed apps seem to work OK.
The next option was a factory reset as per SO Faq pressing power and volume buttons but all I can get the tablet to do is boot up normally. Trying all the button combinations from the web give the same result
Using the advice I have found here I have used ADB and Fastboot recovery option but again no signs of recovery only normal boot up.
Using my limited understanding of ADB I have looked at the partitions on the tablet and they look to me as if they are OK and the recovery information, Stock rom etc is all still there.
The next step looks like CWM and trying to reload a good rom etc. but before I go there, can anyone tell me if they have been able to do a hard factory reset on the Extreme ll ( I can see from previous posts that it can be done on the original extreme)and if so what buttons and when need to be pressed. Of course any other thoughts/suggestions would be welcome
Cheers
