Hi Lazydog,

This does seem very frustrating for you. It is a shame that our equipment does not match exactly. I simply plugged in a standard PC USB keyboard via the OTG cable and it just worked. I have no idea what the key difference for you is here. I don't know if you need to be rooted. My Engage was rooted out of the box.

(A few minutes later) I have just tried it again. I notice that the keyboard lights did not flash when I connected it; this does surprise me as I think that is normal behaviour when you plug a keyboard into a PC. (Later - I have plugged this keyboard into the PC and the lights don't flash on connection. The individual lights do show if I press the relevant lock keys.) Connected to the Engage, the Caps, Num and Scroll lights do go on and off when I press the relevant keys.

I opened Play Store and touched on the search symbol. I could then type into the search box. I unplugged the keyboard and the Android on-screen keyboard popped up. I Plugged the USB keyboard in again and the Android keyboard disappearred again and I carrried on typing OK.

I don't get any notification in the notification area when I connect and disconnect the USB keyboard.

If I go into settings/Language & input that there are options under the heading PHYSICAL KEYBOARD. The options do seem only to apply to the detailed operation, not to do with whether it works at all - they are Auto-replace, Auto-capitalisation and Auto-punctuate. If I unplug the USB this section disappears. It reappears about 2 seconds after reconnection.

I can't see anything that I can change to allow or disallow the USB keyboard.

You may need to send a query to either or both Storage Options and the supplier of your keyboard.

Try going into an app and bring up the on-screen keyboard. Does that disappear if you then plug your keyboard in?

I did all the tests above with my Scroll Engage switched on and active.

You could try a standard PC USB keyboard with your cable if you have one to hand. You could try a USB memory stick with the OTG cable and see if that is recognised. I would have offered to let you try my cable, but my Scroll has a micro, not mini, connector

I can't think of anything else that might make a difference, but if you have any more questions I will try to answer them.

Sorry I can't give a direct answer to resolve your problem

Regards

When you say "went off and nothing" what exactly do you mean?
The lights momentarily flashing denotes external key board connected. - did you actually get as far as using an app or browser so you could actually use the keyboard? It will only be active in situations that actually require a text input.
At all other times it will appear dead when you press keys.
Try getting into a situation whereby the onscreen keyboard is showing then plug in the external keyboard and see if it takes over. There is a 500 ma power host limit on the tablet but this should be plenty to operate just a keyboard.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

thanks for the reply
when I first plug in the keyboard it gives a quick flash then nothing it will not take over from the onboard one.
I have now tried a external HD, a flash drive, ordinary keyboard nothing seems to work with my OTG cable, but before I contact the vender on ebay is there away to check the tablet its self.
All the things including the new mini keyboard/case all work on the laptop, the same micro socket on the tablet works for charging/connecting to the pc.It wont work with anything attached via my mini lead/socket cable and I dont have anything to connect direct without the lead to test OTG facility

Sorry. I am out of ideas now. It seems you have tried everything I would.

Can someone else with a Scroll Essential tell us their experience?

Have you got a usb stick (flash drive) you can try in the OTG as these probably pull the least current.
Secondly, can you try the keyboard on a PC or laptop just to prove the point that the keyboard is working.
As regards testing the OTG (I assume you have a test meter) here are the pinouts. The diagram shows regular usb and OTG wiring.

Image

Pin Name Cable color Description
1 VCC Red +5 VDC
2 D- White Data -
3 D+ Green Data +
4 GND Black Ground

Also try the Keyboard whilst the tablet is on charge to check it is not a low power problem.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

There's some useful info on Wikipedia that may answer your question re wiring.
