BBC iPlayer & Adobe Flash

Postby bradwell77 » December 30th, 2011, 12:36 pm

Just received a Scroll Essential 7" with Android 2.3 for Christmas. Excellent service and value from DABS.

Very impressed with the device.

Wanted a budget Tablet PC for emailing, web browsing and watching You Tube music files on Wi-Fi to help with band rehearsals. Didn't want to jump in with a massive outlay on an iPad or high-level branded Android.

Good browsing experience and very good You Tube replay.

Tried BBC iPlayer but unable to view any catch-up programmes - iPlayer says it needs Adobe Flash Player. Tried Adobe and only the latest version appears downloadable V11 - and it is for Android 3. Have done a little research and read somewhere that Flash 10.2 is needed - but unable to see where you can download it from.

Have read quite a lot on these forums - one or 2 posts talk about Adobe Flash Player being incompatible with the Scroll Essential - but can run on Andriod 2.3.3?

A couple of posts go into to complex - and frankly quite frightening - instructions on 'rooting', backing up the Scroll and making significant file changes. Even given the value of the tablet this is nothing I want to contemplate.

So one simple question - can I get BBC iPlayer and how?

Thanks

Installed Skyfire 1 Jan. Accessed BBC iPlayer and Skyfire video 'un-greyed' - analysed video and ran. Great.

Tried again today - back to square one. iPlayer shows screenshots - clicking on any gets 'need Flash' error. At no point does video icon 'un-grey' to allow analysis.

Have even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Skyfire. No result.

Any idea what I am doing wrong. Do I need licenced Skyfire even though well within 3 day trial?

Sorry for misinformation

Message I get is that '..your phone does not support iPlayer...More phones will be supported in the future."

Is this a differnet problem?

Have now bought the licence, but still does not work with BBC iPlayer.

The Skybar icons at the bottom are all greyed out, but tapping them activates the Analyzing Video icon. Whether on the iPlayer thumbnail of a video, the Flash Needed error message page (in Desktop mode) or the phone not recognised pages (accessed by touching the video thumbnail) - the message NO VIEOS on page is displayed.

Any ideas?

@bradwell77

I think that iPlayer has blocked skyfire from accessing content - So you need flash 10.1 to access iPlayer content and having a Scroll with 2.2 or even 2.3 (which is needed for flash - but there are some workarounds for 2.1 users) - the problem you have here is that your version of the Scroll only has an ARM11 v6 CPU and you need an ARM11 v7+ to use flash properly.

If BBC have made changes then they have taken effect only in the last week. I definitely viewed BBC iPlayer videos perfectly well using Skyfire on Day 1 of the 3-day trial on 1 Jan 2012.

I see now that despite typing in www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer in the address bar of Skyfire on the Scroll, you are automatically directed to www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer. The mobile site shows just thumbnails, with an unsupported error message when you click on one. The non-mobile address, which appears to be only accessable by PC, displays videos as (larger) thumbnails with a Play arrow across the thumbnail. I believe this is what appeared when I accessed on 1 Jan - so either I managed to get around the mobile site, or changes have been made recently.

Thanks for this.

Skyfire has a pull down icon on the top Skybar (alongside the address bar). Scroll down to the Settings option, then to Load Pages As and set default to Desktop. When www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer is entered into the address bar of Skyfire the browser loads the pc version - and iPlayer videos can be seclected and played.

Thanks for this.

Now to Channels 3, 4, 5 and SkyGo........
