loading modules at boot

Hi

I returned my extreme (faulty), and this was replaced with an elite, the thing is working ok, except the modules for the usb serial port are not included, I compiled my own and can load them manually using insmod /system/vendors/modules/pl2303.ko, etc, no problems.
What I would ideally like to do is load them at boot time, I tried editing init.rc but that appears to be over written at boot.
Is there a way to add my own load module commands which run at boot?
