New owner USB Charger query...

We haven't had our Elite very long but am puzzled by the USB charger.

We'd like to use one charger for all our devices and as the Elite comes with a removable USB lead on it's UK mains plug we thought we would be able to just plug in other USB cables (eg USB - Mini B). However, the USB plugs on all our other USB leads refuse to go far enough into the mains plug's socket?

Do Storage Options use a non-standard USB socket and lead for their charger, or is it something we are doing wrong?

We've tried turning over the USB plug so it's not that, the Scroll Options one pushes all the way in, whereas a general USB one will only go about half way in then stop...

Hope someone can help...

Apart from this we are enjoying our new gadget!

Unless someone with an Elite can tell you different, usually the mains chargers that come with a scroll tablet are not usb unless Storage Options have again decided to change their stock pattern. It is possible that Storage Options have changed their charger specifictaion but historicaly when you try to charge your tablet via its usb socket it will only allow a trickle charge and will take much longer to charge than when using the supplied mains charger.

The mains charger that comes with the tablet is usually 2 amp whereas charging via the usb socket on the tablet is normally capped at 500ma (half an amp). Unless you are completely certain that the supplied charger definitely is a usb standard unit with a seperate lead then I would not try using it on other devices as it may be only compatible for your tablet and may not be suitable for other uses. The same goes for the detachable lead that came with the charger.

Sorry I can't be more specifiuc but I don't have an Elite and as Storage Options do tend to change the specifications without notice you may either have a hybrid charger only sutable for your Scroll or you may have a usb charger with a very tight build. Either way I would personally play it safe and use the Scroll charger only on the Scroll. You can trickle charge your tablet via its usb from another charger with usb specifications such as your PC but this will take much longer than when using the devoted charger.

I've had a variety of chargers with Extremes and Elites and I can see what the issue here is. The plug on the USB power lead supplied by S.O. is 9.6mm long but a random "standard" plug is 11.6mm meaning that the "standard" plug when mated with the S.O. charger leaves some metal exposed as it won't plug in fully. Despite this there should be no problem in the two making a proper electrical connection.

Checking specs shows that the "proper" length is 12mm so it looks like the socket used in the S.O. charger is a "shortened" version, with a matching short plug on the power lead.

@Trashcooky - the lead is a USB-barrel connector which plugs into the normal charging socket on the Elite.

It might not be pretty but is should work.

Hi Bob, I guessed as much but not having seen the Elite charger I could not be sure.
I am surprised though that Storage Options are now shipping the Elite and Extreme with a 13a usb plug charger as if these are not of a sufficient fast charge duty - i.e. at least 2 amp rating, the charging time time will take longer than for the old style 2 amp barrel connector block/box lead-sealed charger they used to ship with. I would be interested to know the rating of these new ones out of curiosity, as if someone decided to replace the 13a usb part and re-use the lead they would know what rating to purchase.

Cheers.
T.C.

The 13A plugtop chargers are rated at 2.0 Amps, just the same as the old versions. The new ones have interchangeable U.K. 13A 3 Pin and continental 2 pin plugs so are actually very versatile.

Thanks for that Bob sounds like a grerat improvement over the old design.
