Linux on an Elite

Postby Scott » May 2nd, 2013, 2:34 pm

Has anyone thought of or tried to install linux on a tablet with an Alwinner A10? I have heard of it working on the little Android USB things like the MK802 which use the same Alwinnder A10 and there are linux distros out there for it.

I have an old Elite tablet missing its digitizer but otherwise working (with usb keyboard and mouse) and would like to do something useful with it but have no real idea of how to go about installing this on it or even if it is possible.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi Scott, I believe there are threads on this subject over on the XDA forum. I am not aware of anyone on here who has actually done this although as you say it should be possible.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

THanks, I will check out XDA and post if I get it working.

In the mean time, do you know how to boot into recovery on the Elite? The ususal holding buttons down when powering up just causes a crash and the adb 'reboot-bootloader' or 'reboot recovery' commands just reboot the tablet normally back into the os.

Well no, but I have been lurking here hoping someone would ask!
I have considered buying an Allwinner A10 Scroll but only for use with open Linux. However I do not have funds to buy one, only to void the warranty on day one. I went for a cubieboard.
I guess any "unbrickable" A10 tablet with miniUSB OTG and FEL switch and/or if it will boot from microSD, should be able to spoof a cubieboard. Have a look at http://www.cubieforums.com

One starting point might be Fedora, off a microSD card, as this README is so good:

and his image here

Or explore images from

I should probably point out that the Elite will not boot from SD, or in my case at all if an SD card is inserted. There is also a problem with key mapping and holding any of the buttons down while powering up also causes it to crash requiring a reset.

I Have managed to boot to linux on and SD in my Excel 4.0. Have a look at the little Android PC TV sticks - MK802 III and MK809 II, you can dual boot Android and Picuntu. Check out the forum on Miniand for details.
