Just bought this + 7"

Postby bighuds » October 3rd, 2012, 1:14 pm

Hi guys.

Before I start, I would just like to add that I am completely new to Scroll Tablets, I hadn't even heard of them before yesterday! I am also new to Android!

Anyway, came around buying 2 of the tablets yesterday and as I don't have them here with me in the office I don't know they're names.. What I do know is that one is a 7" and one is an 8".

I haven't had chance to get the 7" out yet, but on my 8" I was wondering if anyone could help me with downloading apps etc? I signed up with gmail.. then didn't even know where to go from there. I went onto google play via the browser but when I clicked install on an app it said, well that I couldn't really.

Hope someone could help me with this.
Oh and before I forget, I plugged it into my TV via HDMI and after about 5 minutes the internet stops working, is this fixable or can you not stream to TB via the internet. (I was just on youtube and browser).

Thanks
huds

Another weird thing is that, on the Storage Options website, when I go to Products>8" Tablet>specification, it says 1GB RAM DDR3.

I am positive that on the box of my 8", it said 256MB RAM DDR2.
Have I bought some seriously old version?

Thanks again

Hi and welcome to the forum, sounds like you need to slow down a bit and wait till you get home and see just what you have bought because you can't get help with it/them otherwise. Please remember when talking about your 7" to make sure you post in the correct sub-forum. As this is the Engage sub-forum I assume that is what your 8" is ?
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

Hi Trashcooky, thank you.

Not a problem, I will update you all once I get home.
But as a heads up before I joined the forum, I ended up here trying to find out what models I actually have. And to be honest, I have absolutely no idea still. But will give as much information as possible once I have the boxes.

Cheers

Hi Trashcooky,

I couldn't log in to my above account, and it also said I was unable to reset my password? Don't know whether having two accounts is not allowed but I really couldn't log in to it.

Hello huds,

Sorry you had trouble with your original account, I have examined the logs but can find no reason why this should have happened.
I did have a bit of trouble myself a few weeks ago where it seemed the site was down for a while but this doesn't sound like what you have described.

Anyway, welcome back and don't worry about being registered twice, just use this latest account which is working OK.

What I have to say is in no way scientific but is a stab at trying to identify your Scroll from the information you have given.

From your specs for your 8" tablet this is no-way a Scroll Engage - and as it has a relatively old operating system on it then I guess (hopefully for you) that you bought these tablets second hand?

On the Storage Options site, the nearest specification to match your description points to your 8" Scroll being:
Model No.: 51951
OS: Android 2.1
Screen: 8"
Case: Aluminium
Released: January 2011

If your case is all plastic then this assumption is wrong.
Here is the manual for the 51951: http://www.storageoptions.com/assets/do ... 0v.1.2.pdf

If this does indeed turn out to be the tablet you have then you might also be interested to know the specs a bit more detailed.

The processor in the Scroll 51951 is a telechips (ARM 11) processor running at 800 MHz which is rather constrained when compared with the later tablets.

As far as I am aware, you will have difficulty modding the tablet as it is based on a telechips prossesor and most work on this and other forums has been for the later Allwinner A10 processor based tablets.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Regarding your 7" I suggest you start another topic in the "Help requests all model" viewforum.php?f=21 giving as much information as you can and we will try to identify that for you as well.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

A cautionary tale
==============
The first tablet I bought was from Morgan's - supposedly an 8" Scroll Tablet with Android 2.3 . When it arrived it was 2.1 so I contacted Morgan and they said - "no problem, you can update it, just contact S.O." I did and found out that there were two 8" Tablets out there one with 2.1 and one with 2.3 - they both had been allocated the same Product Number by S.O. and the only way to tell them apart was the label that said either 2.1 or 2.3, there were, however hardware differences.

The bad news was that there was no update for the 2.1 version and there wasn't going to be. S.O. did warn me that there were some updates out there that would seriously mess up that tablet.

This was the 51951 and if you look at http://www.storageoptions.com/support/scroll/manuals you will see two 8" tablets with the same P.N. One is Scroll 8" the other Scroll Special Edition 8". There is firmware for 2.3 at http://www.storageoptions.com/support/scroll/firmware but I understand that this is just to replace 2.3 on the 2.3 tablet not to update 2.1 to 2.3.

I got my money back from Morgans and bought an Extreme but that's another story.

The lesson of this was that the Product Number didn't uniquely identify the product so make sure that any update is actually intended for the tablet you have.
