Firmware or frameware for digitiser

Postby arnieboy » January 30th, 2014, 10:45 am

Hi

My sons dropped and cracked the screen on both their Scroll Basic Plus 7" tablets. I got a replacement digitiser but when I plugged it in, the screen did not respond. Got a second one and the same happened. Tried both tablets, same result. The seller suggests the "frameware" may be different as it's a generic screen. Being not too technical a) is this correct? b) can it be changed? c) is frameware the same as firmware which I have heard of for peripheral devices such as chip n pin?

Thanks in advance.

Hello arnieboy,

Bad luck with the cracked screen, my wife did the same thing with a tablet of mine that was only 18 days old.
I must say that like you, I also have never heard of the phrase frameware and suspect it may a corruption of the word firmware misheard by your seller and it has stuck. However, whether it is a firmware compatibility or I suspect more likely a hardware compatibility issue you need to be aware of the history/habit that Scroll have repeatedly demonstrated of producing many versions of what on the face of it appear to be very similar, or even the same model tablet but with changes of hardware and firmware during their sales run.

This makes it much harder to try and keep tabs on just what exactly you have actually got and to be honest with the ever falling prices and lightning increases in hardware and performance, I personally feel that you may well be wasting your money on parts trying to repair a broken Scroll tablet when you can almost certainly buy a vastly superior one at low price nowadays. The only proviso I can offer to mitigate that statement is that if you can find another non working device (same tablet) with an OK screen - say on ebay - and you are skilled in repairs of this nature, then I feel you are probably flogging a dead horse.

This is only my opinion of course and I do hope others actually comment and put in their two pennyworth as well.

I boughtone of these and have been very happy with it for the price:

Thanks for the speedy reply. I think it may be dusty bin by the sounds of it then. I take it the firmware cannot be modified then?

You can certainly modify/change the firmware so long as you know what is compatible.....unfortunately, this can be difficult to completely establish - not least because of Scroll's habit of moving the firmware goal-posts without offering customers support for it.

Hi

I've found a firm who repaired both tablets but one of them does not respond to tilting for driving games and Temple Run. I've contacted the firm who gave me software to reinstall which wiped everything but it makes no difference.
Does anyone know a fix please?
Thanks

Hi arnieboy,

Glad you found someone to do these repairs for you.
What you describe, particularly since after taking advice from your repairers and reinstalling the system make it sound like it could unfortunately be a hardware problem with the accelerometer/g-sensor.

I don't know how you would fix this other than by going back to your repairers again.
