Post-root Problem

Postby ddervish » July 4th, 2011, 9:29 am

Hi all.
I finally got round to rooting my scroll [scrol SCR051624), firmware version 1.02s, baseband version 1.02s, kernal version 2.6.29, build Android 2.1] and all went well. I got root access easily and immediately copied the build.prop to my SD card for safety before trying clockwork recovery install. I failed on that as i could not find a relevant file but figured i could go ahead and rename the battery-eating phone-apps anyway [i did them in teh right order and it all went fine].
so whats the problem i hear you ask?
well... i seemt o have lost USB functionality. Prior to all this i could plug in a USB stick or a USB keyboard via the USB-mini USB converter and all was fine. Now it ignores anything plugged into the mini USB slot [my scroll only has 1 mini-USB port] EXCEPT if i connect my PC to it [i have normal functionality when the PC is connected, i can mount drives etc].
the second 'symptom' is that the battery status now appears to be constantly in a state of 'charging' and it thinks it is plugged via the USB. i suspect these two things re related

I have tried re-instating the old Build.prop with no improvement
do any of you clever peeps have any suggestions?

This is odd.....

What youre saying about the usb port suggests to me that its +5v is missing - in other words it cant physically power any active devices but can connect to a pc (the pc doesnt need to use the +5v cxn from the device). What youre also saying about the scroll thinking its charging suggests my first comment about the +5v cxn.

I cant see a reason why removing the pmt files or indeed changing any software on the scroll would cause the symptoms you describe.

Can you insprect the usb connector very closely and see if any of the pins are dislodged or shorted out? If you have an old mini-udb lead cut one end off it and use a multimeter to check the connections. From memory the connectors are wired thus:

PIN Wire Colour Function
1 Red VCC( +5vdc)
2 White Data -
3 Green Data+
4 Black Gnd

Note: Dont use an ohmeter across the data connections - damage may result.

thanks for the fast reply
Looking carefully at the pins i can see no damage or chairing which would suggest they have shirted out. of course i cant inspect the internal wiring
I dont have access to a micro meter so i cant check for power unfortunately

I have a nasty feelign this might need returning to teh shop [ebuyer] which is always a pain
assuming i have to do this, how on earth does one restore to factory settings?

With the device off, hold the vol+ button and press and hold pwer until the recovery menu appears - or you can find it in menu/settings.

i also advise backing up any data and doing a factory reset.. but then again this may be useless as it may be a hardware problem
