Hi Paul from SO,

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to ask questions directly.

I was just wondering why you did not use the Cortex A8 in the original (1st Gen) 7" Scroll and used an ARM11 V6 chip instead?

Cheers :D

Hi everyone, it seems a large number of users were not able to post a question here due to tight posting requirements for the parent forum - however, this has been removed to allow all users to post now. Apologies for this error, thanks to the members that brought it to my attention. Please post your questions below.... thanks!

Hi A couple of questions on the Scroll 8 inch resistive

I as many other do have wifi dropout issues. I have noted this my be fixed at later Anroid levels. Where can I download the Android 2.3 level currently shipped with your Scroll 8 inch offer machine.

A while back I asked you to supply some spare plastic front bezels and was essentially told to not be so stupid and go away. It should a simple matter for you to source this non electronic part. Regards

Hi Charlie

Thanks for being the first to ask a question. It’s a good one, in that to answer it properly will require quite a bit of insight into how we’ve come about and how decisions are made. Forgive me if I indulge myself with my first answer as it might help answer several more later.
The short answer is simply…
Price.
To retail a Cortex A8 chipset product like the new Scroll Excel - http://www.storageoptions.com/products/ ... roll-excel - a year ago roughly when the original Scroll came out, would have meant a retail price well over £200 maybe even £300. For all sorts of reasons, that’s not a step we would have taken at that time – indeed a year on a £200+ price point is a barrier that would still frighten us…
Also, a year ago, the Scroll was arguably the best product of its type on the market, at the entry-level (i.e. c. £150 or less). We were pitching to buyers who’d seen 50 other products, as the market desperately tried to get something iPad-like out for Christmas (at a more affordable price) and none (believe it or not) were coming close to the features we were demonstrating. We were probably about 2-3 months ahead of everyone else and could hit a very attractive price of about £150.

Commercially-speaking, for us (a very new brand, without a massive marketing budget) the right decision was to go with the ARM11 product. High-street buyers were making commitments, the product was good and it was a risk we could afford to take.

A year on and the drop in price of more sophisticated technology is quite astonishing. To be honest none of us thought we would have a product as good as our new Excel, priced at £129 quite so soon.

Hope that helps.

Hi Paul,
I appreciate that the scroll on release was a real bargain and helped people on low budgets to get a chance to experience the Tablet pc format with android os I still feel my scroll is a really handy tool, but was it simply the arm 11 processors limitations the reason why flash is not supported.
I really needed flash to work on this device.

Hi Paul,

The questions I wish to ask are probably a subject you may not wish to comment on, but I feel they need asking anyway. The reason for this is that I personally feel that SO support have "dodged" the answer to these questions on many occasions. An official, honest answer would, I feel, go a long way to putting a rest to some of the bad comments made on here about SO's service.

Firstly, What is the real reason why the original Scroll was released without a licensed working Market? A lot of customers, myself included, felt as though we had been ripped off because we had to use unauthorised means to obtain software which should, realistically, have been freely available to Scroll owners via the Android Market. I simply cannot accept the idea that a company such as yourselves would not have researched your suppliers before entering into a contractual agreement to supply the Scroll in the UK. Personally, I would have happily paid an extra £20 or so for a Tablet which would have been fully functional.

Secondly, requests were made to your company some months ago, for a development kit / source code for the Scroll which, under GPL license conditions, should have been fully available, yet your company chose to release only part of the code. This caused two issues - firstly it would have been impossible for any developer to do their job correctly and compile any software given what SO had provided and secondly I believe it would have violated the GPL license conditions. Your comments on this would be appreciated.

Lastly, there has been no small amount of discussion about the true origin of the Scroll. The most likely scenario IMHO is that it is a rebadged CherryPad. Are you prepared to comment on this?

Hi Paul,
I'm a new user and have a Scroll 8" Model 51951. I'm confused as to the purpose of the 7Gb internal SD memory. I currently have Gb 6.7 free. It would be helpful to be able to install apps in this area. Another problem is with the clock and calender functions, when the Scroll is switched to standby or off they stop working. It would be great if you could provide a fix for these errors.
I use mine as an ebook reader and its an excellent alternative to the Kindle etc.

Thanks!
