Right Scroll Excel box - Wrong contents?

Postby boduke » December 23rd, 2011, 4:59 pm

Hi hope someone can shed some light on this. I ordered the Scroll Excel 7" 3D after seeing the great review The Gadget Show made of it. It arrived today and it worked great etc really pleased with it.

However after checking the memory on it, it doesn't seem to match the specs from the website or the back of the box.

The box and website says:
512MB DDR3 RAM
4GB Flash
Cortex A8 1GHz Processor

Actual specs of the machine when running systems checks are:
316MB TOTAL(used and unused)
2.1GB TOTAL(used and unused)
ARM7 Processor

Has anyone else had this with the new tablet or am I reading something wrong?
Thanks
boduke

The ARM Cortex-A8 is a processor core designed by ARM Holdings implementing the ARM v7 instruction set architecture. Compared to the ARM11 core, the Cortex-A8 is dual-issue superscalar, achieving roughly twice the instructions executed per clock cycle.
dont be afraid of google
androids a funny system loads of wasted memory the box and device are the same you just cant see it when and if we get a rom for this maybe we can repartition some of the memory and dump some excess baggage
WHAT DO WE WANT?
A TIME MACHINE!
WHEN DO WE WANT IT?
IT DOESN'T MATTER

I have also ordered the Scroll Excel 3D which is meant to have a Cortex A8 processor, 512RAM, 4gb internal storage, from Ebuyer.

I am getting exactly the same result as Boduke:

ARM v7 architechture in place of Cortex A8
317 mb in place of 512mb
2gb internal memory in place of 4gb

Results above have been obtained after running System Panel Lite.

After reading the limitations of Android memory usage and reporting I thought connecting the device to the pc would in fact show a 4gb internal memory instead the PC picked up 2gb internal sd card. I made sure there was nothing in the external micro sd card slot.

I can understand the low ram reporting could be due to Androids limitations on reporting hardware however the internal storage fact cannot be ignored.

I have decided to send the device back to Ebuyer and have filed a RMA with them. I will need to contact them tomorrow to find out exactly what they can do. I have initially asked for a refund.

Someone else has also posted the same problem on the review section on the Ebuyer site. Saying all this, the device in its current state is quite capable, but I feel as though I have been cheated.

Is there any programs out there we can run to get the actual hardware information before running android?

Let me know what ebuyer say as I feel the same way the we have been cheated if the tablet is indeed a lower spec.

All,

I had the same as others reported so I have just contacted Storage Options direct who advised the following:

512MB DDR3 RAM - This shows up as 316mb as the other is allocated to the video card

4GB Flash - Just under 2Gb of this is hidden which is why you only see half of it.

Cortex A8 1GHz Processor:

The cortex A8 is based on the ARMv7 processor and has the correct floating point for the cortex A8 which is VFPv3.
The A7 processors floating point is VFPv4.
So it appears to be the Cortex A8.
Scrollbob posted the question on the ARM Processor forum if you want to check it out
http://forums.arm.com/index.php?/topic/15638-cortex-a8/

If in doubt then the guy at Storage Options tech support was very helpful - contact number for them is:

UK Customers: 0844 248 7191 - Irish Customers: 094 937 4026

Hope this helps you out as it is a good product for the price and is getting 4 stars as there seems to be a slight lip sync issue with iplayer and some videos (you tube is fine though) - if this gets resolved then it will be 5 stars all the way.
