scroll essential video format

hi all new to the site. my wife and i bought a scroll essential tablet for our son for xmas. it has android 2.3(probably the same as the rest of them) for the past few days i have been trying to put a video on the tablet via micro sd card and no matter which format i use it wont play. i downloaded a video to android program and that still doesnt seem to work.
should there be certain settings in the settings menu or could somebody pls tell me what it is im doing wrong. normally im good at this sort of thing but im starting to get frustrated now that it wont work. should i be using a special media player to play these files. i have converted them in to h.264 mp4 files. please help

Hi, you could try installing something like moboplayer from the app store.

I find that .AVI or MP4 files play on my Essential, but the .AVI is the better one of the two...
